Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland shatters box office records

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

This past weekend Tim Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND debuted on 5,200 screens at 3,728 sites, and went on to strike box office gold by not only hitting the number one spot for the weekend, but breaking a shit-ton of records in the process!

Taking in an estimated $116.3 million domestically and $94 million overseas in just three days, ALICE IN WONDERLAND had the sixth highest opening ever, broke the record for the highest opening in March (previously held by 300 with $70.9 million), scored Burton’s highest opening ever, had the biggest opening of a non-sequel ever (though that’s debatable, as it was essentially a sequel to all previous ALICE movies), not to mention the highest grossing debut of a 3D film ever, and finally… ALICE IN WONDERLAND also had the largest winter debut of all time. Now say that shit three times fast…phew!

Yes folks, ALICE IN WONDERLAND beat out AVATAR in a number of those categories, potentially lining up ALICE to become the highest grossing film ever made. But… that likely won’t happen. For starters, the 3D was not nearly as impressive or well done as AVATAR, and two… the film was just ‘OK.’

Of course, I may be the only one who wasn’t wowed by the film. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t really do much for me… it was actually quite disappointing. I guess I should have dropped acid before the show started… then it might have been better!

Regardless, it’s quite the impressive weekend for ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and for that… I’ll give it props. Should be interesting to see how long it dominates the box office… until the next 3D movie comes out (yeah, I’m talkin’ to you CLASH OF THE TITANS!).
