Romero's next zoms Sep. 26, 2008

As the resident zombie fanatic around here, I'm obviously excited that legendary undead wrangler George Romero is doing another Dead film. Although I found the social commentary of DIARY OF THE DEAD was a bit "on the nose" compared to Romero's past subtext, it's still great to know he's playing in the same general graveyard.

Movieset talked to producer Nicolas Chartier, who says that the movie is not a direct sequel to DIARY and is as yet untitled (but is being referred to as SOMETHING OF THE DEAD). Romero is gearing up to shoot the film (and rotting heads) in Toronto, and perhaps in a nod to Fulci's infamous zombie-versus-shark scene, will apparently be taking the action into the drink. "We're shooting underwater zombies," Chartier said. "They're swimming, grabbing people's legs, pulling them down. It's a lot of fun."

Romero, however, also told schlock around the clock that his latest features at least a couple of characters from DIARY (unless script changes have since been made), and that the movie is about "tribalism" -- "How the internet creates a Hatfields and McCoys situation." he says. "It’s on an island, where people have been lured by someone on the net as a safe haven, but really what these guys are trying to do is hold them up at the boat docks." Guess that explains the submerged zombies.

Romero also says he wants to make a "balls-out comedy" that is "like the Coyote and Roadrunner movie… with a zombie and a human!"

Extra Tidbit: Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD co-writer Jack Russo parted company after that movie and is responsible for the book that RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is based on, and several comic sequels.

Romero's three original "...of the ...Dead" flicks are still some of the best Zombie movies ever made. "Land Of.." was okay but lacking, "Diary Of.." had some good gore but the plot and characters didn't really grab me. Still, if anyone's seen a worse Zombie movie than "House Of The Dead" I'd be interested to see it. That ranks for me as one of the worst films ever.

come on man, i loved the original dead films, night, dawn, and i even have respect for day. but if i was a director, which i aspire to be, i wouldn't want to be known for one type of movie. i know romero has more ideas in him than zombie films, so give it a try dude. we know you can make a good zombie film, that doesn't mean you can make a masterpiece anytime you try. give us something new romero, you've earned that right

I enjoyed Diary for what it was, which wasn't as much as his "proper" Dead series. But I don't want another. I don't like that, after 4 decades of the best Zombie series there's ever been, he hit the reset button. Was Land of the Dead really the end of that story? Can't he find a way to explore the themes he wants to explore with a fifth proper dead film? Maybe something to wrap it all up before he's gone? These "side" zombie movies are just filler.

I don't know what to think of this. I used to love Romero but his past two zombie flicks have been sub-par at BEST.

Calling Diary of the Dead innovative and original is complete BS. It was, simply, the next logical step. Cinema vérité has been "in" for quite a while now. Even movies that don't directly use it have been influenced by it. Lots of big budget action flicks have been using the shaky cam to bring the audience a more realistic feeling to the material (ala the Bourne movies). In fact, "[Rec]" and "The Zombie Diaries" already used cinema vérité in zombie-style flicks, so I thought Diary of the Dead was a bit of a rip-off. The last thing I'd expect Romero to do is rip-off a low-budget filmmaker, seeing as that's where he got his own start, so I'd LIKE to think all of these people had the same idea around the same time, and with the rising profile cinema vérité has had recently, it isn't all that surprising.

Diary of the dead was a good movie, i wouldnt say it was amazing, but i believe that it would have been bigger if it wasnt for Cloverfield releasing in the same year using that style of shooting, i still think it was incredibly innovative and new to pose a zombie movie in that fashion. That being said, no more of that style please, just a regularly shot zombie movie. George Romero is a god in the zombie world and i'm just glad to see him sticking to it, i have complete faith in him to bring us a kick ass zombie flick, and i'm real excited to see it.

I like zombies just as much as the next ghoul, but Romero seems to have lost his touch with the genre. He would be better off just making the comic book he wrote a few years back into a movie. It had a pretty good plot, and had a freakin zombie elephant in it to boot! Hell, I'd even settle for a sequel to Land of the Dead (as was rumored before Diary was made) before seeing something related to the sub par Diary.

I absolutely loved Diary. I thought it was original for Zombie flicks and also was well shot.

Im pissed off mostly because I live in Charlotte, NC and on the 21st of September I was shceduled to attend a Q and A, plus screenings of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, but, Romero cancelled so he could start shooting earlier. I spent 70 bucks total and I STILL haven't received a refund, after calling and everything. So, either way, if I dont get my money back (which would be fucked up) I will have already soent 70 bucks on this new movie so it BETTER be fucking brilliant.

Also, I really dont think Romero minds being the Zombie Guy because if he did, he wouldve stopped doing the ages ago. He's still the King of Zombies in m book.
