After successfully creating a movie that made me never want to have sex again (ANTICHRIST) Lars von Trier is moving on to his next project, quizzically described as a "psychological disaster film" called PLANET MELANCHOLIA.

All we know so far is that it's in English, it’s got a $7.4M budget and von Trier promises, “No more happy endings!” Ha. Ha. His business partner, Peter Aalbaek Jensen, had slightly more to say:

Jensen has promised a mix of spectacular, cinematic imagery with Dogme-style handheld camerawork -- a combination seen in "Antichrist." Referring to a cringe-inducing scene in that film, Jensen, however, said he hoped no genitals would be cut off in "Planet Melancholia."

He “hopes” no genitals will be cut off. That doesn’t sound like a promise to me. In retrospect, I guess ANTICHRIST was nice enough to ruin sex for BOTH genders, instead of making it a one-sided affair.

Look for PLANET MELANCHOLIA at Cannes in 2011.

antichrist
Antichrist was the story of a husband who discovers that his wife has been slowly going crazy, and now blames herself for her son's death causing her mental health to dramatically spiral downwards. That's all I got. I loved it. I hated Breaking the Waves and haven't seen Dancer in the Dark.

Europa is one of the best films I have ever seen. Dancer in the Dark and his short film "Occupations" are amazing as well. The other two of his I saw (The Element of Crime & Antichrist) not so much.

To each his own, eh? I personally am excited about this new project based on the title alone...

Can't say I'm much of a Trier fan. Until Antichrist, The Kingdom was the only thing he'd done that I loved but now I'm interested to see what he does next, hopefully it won't disappoint.

Von Trier will always be a genius to some or a self-indulgent artist to other. You either love his work or you dont. But no matter how you feel about the guy, he is interesting thats for sure.

I could care less about what Von Trier is doing next. Hands down, "Antichrist" is easily the worst film of the year. Here's a review I wrote back on 8/29/09:

sigh
I have no idea what the hell was going on in AntiChrist. It was disturbing and beautiful, but slower than Simple Jack and pointless to boot.

Not the best film...
But certainly one of the best (genital mutilation apart), Jig Saw 123.

Sounds like it'll be great, Antichrist was hands down the best film of 2009, thus far.
