UPDATE: Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey shot several scenes of The Avengers with an iPhone

Oct. 24, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Oh these kids and their rapidly produced technology. One day they'll be able to use those dang phones to teleport across the world.

But for now one crazy thing they're doing is filming big budget films with an iPhone.

Believe it or not, certain scenes from THE AVENGERS were shot with what is assumed to be an iPhone 4 unless they got their hands on a 4S before anyone else did. That would be a great way to con Apple into giving you one early though. "Hey, we'd love to shoot some of THE AVENGERS with an iPhone, so how about you let us try out that new 4S?"

Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey told The Irish Film and Television Network all about it, "The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film."

UPDATE - McGarvey spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and said he was misquoted. "I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvels The Avengers movie. Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true."

So I've posted the trailer below. Let's see if we can spot the scenes shot with the iPhone!

Update: Obviously...

Clearly a mis-quote.
The film will look fantastic, obviously he's adopted the 'Marvel' look but that studio watches over these crews like hawks.
If you doubt Seamus go watch Atonement again..

How could anyone believe this? No offense to you Apple fanboys out their but no phone camera is anywhere near that good. My phone says 1080p... it sure as hell doesn't look like it.

Good to know...

But I still say the cinematography doesn't look very good.

So according to the second update, they didn't use the iphone to shoot any footage. They used the Canon instead.

Why does this damn site always kick me off while I am trying to submit a comment?

If I take longer than the average 10 character response I get timed out and lose everything I have typed...

This is beyond absurd

I can't tell and I'm not even going to try speculating where in the trailer it is but if it works it works.

If it holds up in the film, I would be very impressed. I realize that consumer tech is getting way up there, limited only by what it can do and not necessarily how it looks, but still. Being able to use consumer tech to create something that looks as good as professional tech is quite impressive.

the first shot of thor at 0:48.
possibly the shot of ironman and cap at 1:06.
and probably thor swinging the hammer at 1:32

look for any shot with very little motion and less detail than the rest of the trailer

That's neat! Chances are, it's probably shot with an iphone because someone in the movie is literally filming something with an iphone. I don't think an action movie makes that sort of stylistic choice purely on artistic grounds, heh.

Honestly...

I thought some (most) of the shots in the trailer looked kind of... cheap? This is essentially the most epic movie of all time, and it shouldn't be taken so lightly ($150 million budget, phone cameras, etc)
