by: Mike Sampson Jul. 24, 2010

We'll have full details from the Marvel Studios panel very soon but first a little tease from Comic-Con! As was widely expected, Marvel closed out the panel (which had featured THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA) with a surprise teaser for THE AVENGERS. It was basically a shadow of the AVENGERS logo and a voiceover that talked about the world's greatest heroes teaming to battle a foe that no one person could ever stop. It was maybe less than 30 seconds but as soon as it was over, they introduced Sam Jackson to the stage.

He then went on to introduce Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and then, the King of Comic-Con, Robert Downey, Jr. Downey to the mic, said that he saw INCEPTION and thought how it was one of the most ambitious films he had ever seen. Then he though to himself, wait...THE AVENGERS is one of the most ambitious films ever! He went on to introduce the newest members of the team, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and Joss Whedon as writer/director.

Whedon spoke quickly about the film saying he had a dream ever since he was a little boy and being able to make THE AVENGERS with that cast, was SO much better than that dream. He said he's worried he's going to screw it up but he's going to do his best to make it awesome. And that was about it. We all kinda knew it was coming but I have to admit it WAS cool seeing them all there on stage...

love rdj but come on man...
i know ill prob get thumbed down for this but i find it HILARIOUS that Marvel/Favreau/RDJ are so CLEARLY intimidated by Nolan and TDK that when Iron Man II was barely a whimper in comparison to TDK, they cannot help themselves but try and take shots at Nolan and Co.

Looks like someone is a little bitter about being (at best) in second place lol

I thought the Norton thing was a ruse...
...you know, where they say "he doesn't work well with others"...and I thought "hey, that sounds like how they'd describe The Hulk fitting in with The Avengers".

I was kinda hoping they were actually being really clever, and that at Comic-Con they'd come out with "just kidding! of course, he's in the movie...we were just drawing a parallel to the Hulk...get it?"

Not sure what to think. On the one hand, I think this is a great idea and an admirable endeavor. And the choice of director for this was really smart. On the other hand...the more I think about it, the more I believe they screwed up by getting rid of Norton. And it looks like they dodged that bullet by not allowing questions. Hm.

Meh
No Wasp, no Hank Pym, no Ed Norton!...And wtf is Black Cat even doing involved with this. Could have put Vision or Black Panther instead.

They've already screwed this up with a black Nick Fury and removing Norton. We'll see how the final product looks. (I'm hoping for the best)

Love the neg thumbs btw everyone. Keep in mind that I really am hoping this turns out to be Spectacular. I'm pretty sure that with the amount of that's been put into this, that they'll get it right. But I am still skeptical at the same time.

The No Ed Norton thing really, really bugs me. It's like Marvel just wussed out. Totally lame.

That said, in the comics, black Nick Fury is *so* much better than regular nick fury. By, like, a lightyear. So I completely disagree with you there.

its crazy that this has actually come together, thats a lot of pressure on Chris Evans as the leader.

But seriously, how could they not want Ed Norton in this movie?

Hmmm..
Happy about all of this except Ruffalo... Hawkeye was cast almost PERFECTLY and the line-up here looks good. I wish someone more "serious" in nature was going to play the most straight edged hero in Capt America, and someone a little bigger play Thor, but we shal see how they mix on screen.

This looks awesome. My only concern is that to me it seems like an Avengers film is dead end for any more of these characters to have a single film. I can see Iron Man 3 working, but not to sure about Cap't America 2 or Thor 2. I guess there could maybe be an Avengers 2, but I'd be hard to get the whole cast for a second movie (we already lost Norton). Oh well, just thinking out loud. I...

Well as you could consider Thor or Captain America as two of the bigger gambles when it comes to Marvel output (especially Captain America outside of the USA) then consider its probably a good route for these characters to get a second showing.

As for getting the whole cast, they are signed for multiple picture deals, so getting them back won't be an issue, it'll be whether Marvel WANT them back or not.

I believe Norton was on a two picture deal, compared to Ruffalo's rumoured 7 and Samuel L's 9.

Cool. Good cast. Now if any of them back out, it will be like WTF? Good job of wrangling everyone in there, Marvel. They need another female lead. I'm not familiar with The Avengers storyline; any other bodacious babes involved in the universe? I'm more of an X-Men guy myself.

There's the sexiness that is Janet Van Dyne, AKA Wasp. Last I heard, Eva Longoria was up for the role. How about Eva Mendes instead?

I don't care if the Thor movie ends up sucking, but if they want Avengers movie to work then Captain America HAS to blow everybody away like Iron Man did.

It all makes sense now
Remember before at Comic Con how Ed Norton basically said that the Incredible hulk script was garbage and how he had to rewrite it? And then he said on Jimmy Kimble Live that he was going to "rescue this franchise from oblivion"? And then when the movie came out he was publicly upset about Marvel editing out scenes that he had written? Could you really have imagined Ed Norton standing arm in...

And then he said on Jimmy Kimble Live that he was going to "rescue this franchise from oblivion"? And then when the movie came out he was publicly upset about Marvel editing out scenes that he had written? Could you really have imagined Ed Norton standing arm in arm with not only his Avengers co-stars but also the writer / director? Frankly, I can't see it. Ed Norton is a good actor but he's also a bit of an asshole and they didn't want anybody who could potentially ruin this moment.

I Just Don't Get It....
I love the idea of an Avengers movie. However, I just wonder why that Johansson is in this movie. Black Widow was not an original Avenger.

What gives?

Well, Agent Coulson isn't even a character from the comics but it looks as though Whedon liked the actor so he's in there too. But no War Machine? Like Rhodey said in the first movie "Next time". Ditto for Ant Man and the Wasp (and the Vision and the Black Panther, etc.)

It's awesome finally seeing this all come together. Sure, it would have been great to have Norton back as Banner, but Ruffalo has the acting chops to make a great Banner/Hulk.

P.S. RDJ is quite the guy for saying that about Inception! Here's to him and the rest of the Avengers!
