Disney confirms the future release of stand-alone Star Wars films

02.05.2013

Ever since we heard the news of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, it just keeps coming and coming. Your second story from a galaxy far, far away has to do with the standalone films that will be released between episodes.

Disney CEO Bob Iger appeared on CNBC and confirmed the news. The only news he didn't seem to confirm was what we posted earlier today about Yoda being the focal point of the first standalone.

This is what Iger had to say: "I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too."

He also went on to add that Kasdan is consulting with J.J. Abrams, who as we all know is attached to direct the next STAR WARS episode.

The one thing I want to here but haven't yet is when they are releasing the original trilogy unedited. Sure you can remaster the picture, remaster the sound, but leave out all that other crap, no jabba, not greedo shooting first bull.

No such thing as "too many" Star Wars movies. There's already a huge dearth of them. There are eleven "Star Trek" movies. There are seven "Saw" movies. Hell right now "Fast and Furious" is locked in a dead heat with Star Wars.
And there are only three GOOD Star Wars movies. Pump 'em out. Better out than in, I always say.

I love the Star Wars Universe so much! How many of us still watched (and still own) the prequels just so that we could see the planets, lightsabers, bounty hunters, space ships and Jedi? Knowing that the cinematic world I grew up loving is in the right hands makes me so happy I could scream. Even though Harry Knowles "scoop" may just the ravings of an overzealous fan (at this point) I'd be more than interested in seeing a Yoda film, and I hope Joe Johnston gets to do his Boba Fett flick as well.

How is too much Star Wars possible after a whole 6 movies in 35 yrs? How many movies has Marvel pushed out in the last 5 yrs? Iron Man 1 and 2 and now 3 Incredible Hulk, Thor, Capt America, Avengers, Capt 2 and Thor 2 coming next year and ton of other Marvel stuff. Really people are going to bitch about movies coming from one of the most celebrated sci fi universes ever? Lucas's fat ass is out of the way now, its time to give us good movies with new and old characters alike.

Sounds good to me. Id even like to see a few smaller films set in the same universe. Maybe a western type thing on Tatoonie between rival cantinas? LOL. Just normal films, set in the Star Wars universe.

I could see a movie with a smuggler character as the lead set in the backwaters of the galaxy on crap planets like Tatooine and others.

What might work would be an anthology film, with several directors taking on a different short film each set in the Star Wars universe. I'd also be keen to see a team-based film, like one about a squadron of starfighter pilots or a team of Rebel commandos.

Star Wars over-load

Reminds me of when X-Men origins Wolverine was about to come out, and Fox was saying there would be a bunch of other stand-alone films along with Wolverine. Than Wolverine underperformed and everything changed. Even the Magneto origins eventually became X-Men First Class, more of a prequel than a stand alone film.
To be fair, I'm ok with stand alone films that don't involve characters from the other movies. There's plenty to explore in the Star Wars universe with new characters without doing

There's plenty to explore in the Star Wars universe with new characters without doing solo movies for Qui-Gon, Lando, Admiral Ackbar, etc. , or whoever else they're thinking about. But seems like Disney is only interested in cashing in on the characters everyone already knows.

7, 8, and 9 is much better news that a reboot rumor which was posted here a week ago. if rebooting meant havin a new cast than that's fine of course but I'd love for some of the originals to come back.

Jar-Jar Binks!

have a Jar Jar Binks movie. It'll be him being chased down, beaten and executed. No dialogue needed. Have it only 10 minutes long and release it in theaters. You'll be able to get a hundred showings a day at a theaters and it'll make tons of money. I know i'll pay to see it a dozen times it's first day

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. After all, they got Marvel right, they can (and I emphasize can, not will) do the same with Star Wars.

I know how this is going to sound but

Is anyone else major league worried about there being too much Star Wars?

thats what i've been saying these past 2 days. And not only too much but it'll also confuse mainstream audiences going back and forth between canon and none-canon films.

ugh

I was one of the few people that was really on board with Disney buy Lucas films from day one. Now with each passing news story im more and more unsure. Why can't they just focus on the trilogy and spend the time on a new Indiana Jones movie instead of none cannon Star Wars

yes downvote me, im use it at this point

I know, focus the story on a cab-driver. Of a flying cab. Have Bruce Willis play him and have a Jedi drop into his cab.
