Get your walking stick, the new trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is here!

Sep. 19, 2012by: Paul Shirey
UPDATE: For those interested, the film's official site is allowing you to "create" your own ending to the trailer (5 difference choices) RIGHT HERE!

Well, the wait is over! The all-new trailer for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY is here and is every bit as epic as you could want. Dwarves, Hobbits, Gandalf, Smeagol, Trolls, Elrond, Galadriel, and...rabbits? They're all here and looking as lush and fantastic as the first LOTR trilogy. The trailer features quite a bit of comedy from the dwarves, which makes it a bit more lighter in tone than the previous trilogy, but no less sweeping and dangerous.

Grab your walking stick and head out the door:

It would be hard for anyone not to be excited for this. I didn't notice any visual problems (as has been rumbled about with the 48 fps footage shown earlier this year) and it looks perfectly in line with what we've come to expect from a Peter Jackson LOTR flick.

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY hits theaters on December 14, 2012 with the sequels THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG set for December 13, 2013, and THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN on July 18, 2014. So, pretty much we're set on Hobbits for the next few years.

Extra Tidbit: Who are you most looking forward to seeing in action?

Bleh

The trailer felt like it was four hours long. It doesn't feel like it has any emotion at all. Just lots of CGI which was where Lucas failed with the prequals.

I have to really work on transitioning myself from Lord of the Rings mode, to Hobbit mode. My first reaction to this trailer was, it looks incredible, but it lacks the emotional punch that I felt when I orginally saw the trailers for Lord of the Rings back in the day..., but then, after my seventh or eighth time watching it I remembered that The Hobbit (the book) was a very different type of story than Lord of the Rings; it was much lighter in tone, more humorous, it was not an epic saga of

When I remembered this and I watched the trailer for The Hobbit once more, I found myself smiling from ear to ear.

never..

..been a big fan of the films, theyre great quality but feels like they dragged the story too much over the 3 films. ive always loved the animated movie they made back in the day.
just hope hobbit wont drag its story endlessly. otherwise it looks like good fun.

Looking suitably epic, if not a little heavy on the CGI.

Just when I thought I couldn't be more buzzed for this flick. December 14th can't come soon enough for me. Extra tidbit: the Misty Mountains goblin battle looks like it's going to kick serious ass.

I don't really have too many complaints except it felt a little too light and comedic to me. That's really an issue with the trailer though and probably not with the film itself, I think. The first trailer from last year was creepy and somber, exactly what I want. This first film, I'm sure, will be the lightest of the three, so it probably won't end up being my favorite of the bunch, but I'm excited nonetheless. Bring on The Desolation of Smaug!

Five different versions of The Hobbit trailer came out today, and Peter Jackson announced that tomorrow the 9th Production blog will be online. It's a great time to be a Hobbit / LOTR fan!

Wonderful and marvelous!

This is what cinema is all about, grand in scope, beautiful imagery, great storytelling, interesting characters and pure entertainment from the heart! I never understood why there were some out there who ever doubted Peter Jackson, the only man ever to achieve filming the LOTR to near perfection. Three movies like this, how can anyone complain about that?

CGI?

This looks absolutely fantastic. Once the new trilogy is complete, it should be able to stand on the same level as the original LOTR trilogy. The only gripe about this is that it seems a little TOO cgi-heavy. I'm glad it seems like it will have a different feel to it than the LOTR, but everything just looks like a video game. Most notably, Gollum and his eyes, the goblins, and the general atmosphere and lighting conditions, such as in Rivendell. Hopefully this will play out better on the big

Think about it . . .

You're not going to see "visual problems with 48fps" on a YouTube video! You can only see 48fps when 48fps is actually used and displayed. This video isn't even close to HD, let alone an advanced format.

Having said that . . . DAMN! Christmas can't come soon enough!

Cannot wait for December!! Everything looks perfect! The only thing that I do not like is the humor, as I did not really like Gimli's humor in LOTR, but this crew's humor may be more fitting with this story.

If you go back through the books, you'll find that a lot of "Gimli's humor" wasn't invented by Jackson and Walsh, but was part of the original character as written.

If you go back through the books as well, you will see that Gimli's lightheartedness in the books is really nothing like his comic relief in the movies. Burping, falling off horses, getting stuck under wargs and falling down hillsides are the actions of a buffoon, not a heroic dwarf. I still liked him in the movies, I just wish they would have toned him down a bit to mirror his character in the book a bit more.

You're so right about Gimli, that was just clumsily overdone. I think Jackson gets a lot really right, but his humor and action got so heavy-handed, in a few spots, that it messed with the whole tone of the film in Lotr and King Kong.

Looking forward to the movies, but....I guess the fact that The Hobbit isn't an "epic" book makes me wonder why the trailer is trying so hard to be as epic looking at LOTR. It didn't FEEL like "The Hobbit" as I know it.

Looks amazing, but...

I'm still quite upset about the stripping down of this first film in favor of making a trilogy.
Kinda selling out, if you ask me.

What do you mean stripping down? Won't making the playtime longer do exactly the opposite?

Stripping down the first film so that 3 movies can be made with 2 separate stop points. Duh. The first film will not go nearly as long now (was supposed to end with them in the Elf King's prison... now, not so much). They are stretching a small book into way too many movies.

No, dear Avatard, if you crammed the whole book -and all the behind the scenes happenings from the Appendices- into one film, then the story would have to be condensed. Stripped down. Giving it three films will allow for a lot more detail and content. I guess you are basically complaining about having to wait for the next chapter.

ah, Radagast is there! The action looks slightly slapstick yet brutal...Thorin still looks a bit young, yet now Armitage can be seen giving him a great majestic personality. Nice.
