Invincible director Ericson Core to direct remake of Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break

Apr. 11, 2013by:

100 percent pure bullshit! Yeah, we've heard rumblings of a POINT BREAK remake for a while now, with the likes of SPEED's Jan DeBont in the mix at one point, but now it appears that Alcon studios is pushing forward with the venture, hiring INVINCIBLE director Ericson Core to helm it. Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM) wrote the script, which takes the "extreme" aspect of the original to the next level, by incorporating it "in the world of international extreme sports" with an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a crime ring.

Now, there's sure to be someone to step up and say that 1991's POINT BREAK was just a silly action movie and that there's no reason to get into a twist over this. However, no one ever said it wasn't silly. It's most certainly a kick ass, over-the-top, high-adrenaline actioner with some really great performances from all involved, including the late Patrick Swayze as surfing guru (and bank robber) Bohdi and Keanu Reeves as special agent Johnny Utah. Oh, and let's not forget Gary Busey. If nothing else, the original POINT BREAK is one of the finer examples of an action film, especially from that era.

So, why in the hell does it need to be remade? The short answer; it doesn't. I actually enjoyed Core's INVINCIBLE more than I thought I would, but that's not the best indicator that he's the man for the job. No one is, because it's not a job that needs to be done. But, we can bitch all we want and it's still going to happen. Could a cast add some merit? Possibly. Can the original be topped? Not f*cking likely.

Shooting begins on POINT BREAK later this year.

Extra Tidbit: Strange Days is another underrated pic from Bigelow that doesn't get enough love. Written by James Cameron and starring Ralph Fiennes, it's a fun piece of action/sci-fi. Give it a whirl if you've never seen it.

Terrible idea, but if they must we might as well speculate about casting:
Johnny Utah: Anthony Mackie
Bodhi: Bradley Cooper
Pappas: Val Kilmer
Tyler: Cobie Smulders
Ben Harp: John C. McGinley

Why??

Really? Hollywood has nothing better to do than ruin my guilty pleasure movie? It doesn't need updating with snowboarding and base jumping or extreme lawn darts or whatever the hell else you decide! Remake Roadhouse while you're at it..sheesh!

BOOOOO!!!

Hollywood needs to take their heads out of their asses on this! point break was amazing. and it still holds up today. I remember seeing in the theatre as a 12,13 year old like 2 or 3 times. I instantly wanted to learn how to surf and sky dive. a remake is completely unnecessary and pointless. if you want to make a movie with that premise mentioned above, fine go ahead. but don't call it a point break remake. worst. idea. ever.

There already was a remake to Point Break.

And it's called The Fast And The Furious. (If someone said that already, I do apologize.)

I'll give you one of the main reasons why this'll tank:
One of the beauties to what was of Point Break was it's beautiful cinematography and the way Bigelow was able to capture the essence, feel, and the adrenaline rush of post 80s- early 90s pop culture and Californian culture. NOT TO MENTION the use of Synthesizers in Mark Isham's awesome score. On top of all of that, you had Patrick Freakin' Swayze, whose this Ericsson guy gonna cast? Joel Kinnaman as fuckin Johnny Utah? I won't say I'll

I won't say I'll pass because I'll probably end up seeing it, but I find Point Break such a weird choice of all films that are being remade. Let's face it, Point Break is one of those movies that belong as nothing more than a great piece of Action nostalgia!

This is just more evidence that creative writers are few and far between. And, if you ask me, remaking this will be like pissing on Bodhi's grave. Well, it looks like the RHCP might have a future after all....

"You gonna jump or jerk off? "...looks like they chose the later.

I think it would be a brilliant move to remake it with Gary Busey. Now that he's gone totally batshit fucking crazy it would be surreal.

I usually don't cry about a remake, until I see it, but this is one of my all time favorite films... Fuck a remake of this film! If anything make a sequel and bring back the OG Johnny Utah!!

Meh...screw this movie

F & F was a good enough modern version. Off subject; watching the original it's crazy to think Busey has outlived Swayze, it's a strange world.

NOOOOOOO

PLEASE NO!
Cant they see that remakes are no good to classic films. Total recall prime example. Robocop will be shit aswell and will not involve half of the layers as the original movie. Cinema is being dumbed down with use of over the top vfx and sound effects and forgetting about the heart of a movie. If this does come out I hope people dont turn out to see it.

Complete and utter horse manure! Point Break is absolutely ridiculous, and even more ridiculous for how well it all works. Point Break isn't a movie, to me it's like an album that I pop in whenever I'm looking for that special kick. They don't make movies like that anymore. I'm not sure that they made movies like that before then, either. I don't know that we necessarily have actors like that anymore, either. People who can embody a movement. Ryan Gosling, maybe, but he'd have the good common

It was already remade and was VERY successful...

It's called The Fast and the Furious. The original Fast and the Furious is a nearly identical, if very watered down, PG-13 version without any of the depth of the original. But it is beat by beat, character for character, the same film.

All three films are very similar. However, TFATF does hold more similarities in terms of story beats with Point Break, such as the hero letting the anti-hero go because they're escaping in a suicidal fashion, as well as the whole originally making the connection at a diner and the spiritual/family aspect of the villain's lifestyle.
