John Boyega takes the lead role as Idris Elba's son in Pacific Rim 2

06.06.2016

PACIFIC RIM 2 (otherwise known as PACIFIC RIM: MAELSTROM) has had a bit of a rocky start, with the project being delayed and Guillermo del Toro stepping down as director, but the following news is sure to be a welcome shot of adrenaline to the series. Deadline is reporting that FN-2187 himself, John Boyega, will be taking a leading role in PACIFIC RIM 2. To add an extra dash of "awesome" to this dish, he'll be playing none other than the son of Idris Elba's character from the first film. Can a movie be any more bad ass? Well, I suppose you could throw in giant robots fighting monsters!

Guillermo del Toro on casting John Boyega:

I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.

Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil, Dollhouse) is stepping in to helm this sequel, but del Toro will stay on in a creative capacity, fortunately. Honestly, I loved the first film and I think it struck the right balance of simple and fun. As much as I wish del Toro was back in the director's chair, I trust his judgment in bringing DeKnight into the mix, and I can't wait to see some giant robots punch the crap out of monsters again!

Production on PACIFIC RIM: MAELSTROM will begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

This is beyond awesome. Please just confirm Maisie Williams to be in it too and we're gonna have the biggest geek party in history.

Awesome

John Boyega all the way! Even though I had some headscratching issues with the first movie, I enjoyed it for what it was and hope this sequel will be just as enjoyable, because Del Toro really paid attention to detail in terms of FX which IMO will be kinda tough to surpass.

He'll be good. He'll add some spark to the dialog.

Now, come on, give Daisy a butt hugging suit for piloting a Jaeger too...

Career Killer

I think this could be a huge setback for John. The 1st movie was horrible and I wouldn't expect a sequel to do any better.

Loved the first, sat close to the front and it felt like a ride at Universal Studios.

Maybe if Elba isn't cast as the next Bond, Boyega will end up being the first black James Bond in 10-15 years. He's on the right track

Now I have two reasons to love this film. A) John Boyega and B) My Brother hates this film SO MUCH I just have to say 'Elbow Rocket' to piss him off :)

Great casting but do we really need another one of these? For a movie with giant robots the first was was PAINFUL to get through and made absolutely no sense even in the 'hey its a movie' kind of way.

as a guy who likes movies purely for entertainment purposes, it was awesome.

The first one made sense. It's called suspension of disbelief. If you can believe that the polar ice caps melting would fully submerge the world in Waterworld (in reality ocean levels would rise 61 meters (200 feet) not even the equivalent of the empire state building in New York which is 1250 feet) then im sure you can suspend your disbelief for robots fighting mawdafawkin kaijus pal.

Terrific casting, but I do hope Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Pearlman all return as well in pivotal roles like the first one and not just pushed aside for new characters.

That's a major plus for PACIFIC RIM

John Boyega is riding high with FORCE AWAKENS: that film and ATTACK THE BLOCK shows he does well in action movies. I could really see him playing a junior Idris Elba and the conflict Elba has with sending his son out to fight kaiju will add a lot to the film. That's a major plus for investors and studio brass when promoting this film.

lol! That could still work as a flashback scene or if they decide to make this a parallel-sequel (think Bourne Legacy) with Boyega fighting the Kaiju elsewhere maybe in some gritty East European setting.

I thought the 1st was mediocre at best. Effects were cool when you could actually see what was going on in the dark and rain, but some of the dialogue and characters were lame. Still surprised they are moving forward on the sequel.
