Prequel to The Boondock Saints being developed as a TV series

06.08.2015

Fans of THE BOONDOCK SAINTS can stop waiting for a third film in the series as writer-director Troy Duffy will instead be bringing you a television series featuring the MacManus brothers. Duffy will team with IM Global on a prequel series which he will write. The news comes during the current hot streak for feature films being adapted for the small screen.

There is currently no network attached to THE BOONDOCK SAINTS series nor is there any word as to whether Sean Patrick Flanery or Norman Reedus will be involved. Duffy had this to say about the series.

“For years I’ve been obsessed with telling a real origin story with Boondock, and IM Global TV has stepped up,” Duffy said. “Television is the perfect medium to explore these controversial characters on a much deeper level and to bring Boondock Saints to a whole new audience.”

THE BOONDOCK SAINTS was a massive word of mouth hit when it debuted in 2000. It was followed by a sequel in 2009 while talk of a third film has been rumored since then. Duffy's rise to fame and subsequent fall was made into the documentary OVERNIGHT. Personally, I have always found THE BOONDOCK SAINTS to be incredibly overrated. The only saving grace for the first film was the chemistry between Reedus and Flanery along with the involvement from Billy Connolly and Willem Dafoe. How a series will work would hinge on the involvement from those four as a recasting of the characters would feel a lot like THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED, which is to say not good.

There is no expected premiere date at this time for THE BOONDOCK SAINTS but stay tuned as this develops.

Could honestly care less. I always thought these movies were overrated. The first one was ok the first time I saw it, but never really did anything for me with further viewings over the past years. I never saw the sequel b/c I was never impressed with the first one.

I think this as a TV series will be pointless. There is just not that much story to tell there and while it's the common trend now to turn any small budget movie into a TV series, it doesn't mean every movie will work as a

Considering the brothers weren't vigilantes prior to the first movie, how do you translate that into a prequel story that will span numerous years? Just becomes boring and pointless.

Love both films (even though the original is the far superior one, and also one of my favorite films of all time), but I would rather see a third entry instead of going backwards with the story and doing an origins series.

And if the Saints aren't Flannery and Reedus, then don't even bother.....at all.

I think if maybe it took place with the brothers in Ireland (pre-Boston) and showed how they became so devoted and maybe show The Duke's origin I can get behind this. I'd still like to see a third close out the trilogy though. The ending of the 2nd was a bit of a cliffhanger with the boys locked in with all those they put away.

I enjoyed the first one when it came out, but then I introduced it to my college roommate and he became OBSESSED with it. I would wake up and he would be watching his favorite shootout scenes first thing in the morning to get himself pumped up and ready to go to class. Looking back, I find that weirder now than I did then...fast forward a few years and he's a doctor now. Maybe yours?

I liked the original Boondock Saints, but I can't say I'm interested in a prequel. Wasn't the original already an origin story? There won't be much to do unless it focuses on the Billy Connolly character.

I think that Boondock Saints is a film that people either come to love or hate. I personally love it, and it was on my top ten list for a long time (my passion for the film has died down). But I still would love to see there be more development for more Boondock stuff. Not entirely sure what they plan to do for an origin story. I thought that the first movie was just that. I also agree that recasting would be a terrible idea. Flannery and Reedus are one of the central reasons the film is such a
