Simon Pegg wasn't the biggest fan of that Star Trek Beyond trailer either

12.17.2015

Just a few days ago the first trailer for Justin Lin's STAR TREK BEYOND was released and it received somewhat of a mixed reaction, especially from Star Trek fans. Everything from the choice of music to the action-centric focus of the trailer was questioned, but as STAR TREK BEYOND director Justin Lin said, it's only a minute and change of a two hour film. HeyUGuys caught up with Simon Pegg during the premiere of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and asked for his thoughts on the trailer.

It was very action packed. I was…it was surprising. I found it to be kind of…the marketing people sort of saying ‘everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun’, when there’s a lot more to it than that. I didn’t love it, because I know there’s a lot more to the film. There’s a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum. So to Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there, be patient.

Considering that Simon Pegg co-wrote STAR TREK BEYOND in addition to appearing in it, I've got to assume that he knows what he's talking about and that we'll see more "Star Trek stuff" in future trailers. Although the trailer didn't do much for me, I'm still excited to see what the latest adventure of the Enterprise crew will bring. In a recent interview with Nerdist, Simon Pegg said that STAR TREK BEYOND will shift focus away from the Kirk/Spock "bromance" that has been the focus of the past two films and concentrate more on the entire crew.

I felt like now it was time to move away from the bromance thing and concentrate on the idea of the crew as a family living in a small space together, and what it means to all of them. I really love the dynamic between Bones and Spock, so that’s something we’ve kind of concentrated on a little bit with this one. Kirk’s older than his dad was when he died. All that sort of psychological stuff is playing on him. Scotty’s just still Scotty.

STAR TREK BEYOND is set for a July 22, 2016 release.

Totally agree with Pegg and I'm so glad he didn't enjoy that trailer at all either. There's so much more to Star Trek films than the action and that basically gave us the opposite on what we wanted.

I didn't think the trailer was awful, but certainly it was meh. It confirmed that I will watch the movie so I guess in that sense the trailer did it's job.

Uh Oh! Gotta re-do this before it's release

They need to shift gears on this movie right away, or it's going to be a gigantic flop and no one's going to want another 'Star Trek' movie. Like everyone else, I thought the music was all wrong for this, releasing the trailer during 'Star Wars' week was also a big mistake. And for crying out loud, pick a fight with the god damn Klingons or something, a freaky looking alien race as the main bad guy never works. Yes, I know Klingons are freaky looking aliens, but they are 'Star Trek', they

Yes, I know Klingons are freaky looking aliens, but they are 'Star Trek', they belong. It's been three movies now, why aren't they at odds with the Klingons yet? This feels all wrong and doesn't look like it's going to work, they have to re-do it, spend more money to make it work or that's it. No more freaky looking rogue aliens, its where the 'Generation' crew started heading before they finally called it quits.

Alienwise I'm all for something new personally. Why not save the klingons for later? To do them now would be predictable and could even be seen as the easy or safe option. Coming up with something new at least hints that they might be trying.

Because if this doesn't work, and it already has that feel to it, there ain't going to be a next one, that's what I'm concerned about.

I thought the best part of the trailer was Spock beaming up without Bones and then the reaction afterwards. I absolutely love the cast for these new Star Trek films. Everyone was perfect and expertly cast.

it was an awesome trailer, showing kickass action scenes, funny moments and one-liners. The music was especially rousing. Except this is the biggest deviation from what a Star Trek trailer should be. It's like Fast & Furious in space. Oh wait, Justin Lin directed. Well that's just typical.

Hmm

I love Simon but that trailer was awful.
What bothers me is that everyone who makes something the masses don't love (Star Trek JJ Abrams, josh trank) etc. They make excuses for the bad stuff. Why not just do it before. Why not leave or change things. It is literally all in their hands. Making excuses after is getting old just do it right the first time.

Wait a minute: Simon Pegg did not make excuses for what many consider a bad film. He is defending a movie from what he (and a large majority) considers a bad trailer. You have not seen the movie, so how do you know it's bad? A bad trailer can make a good movie look bad and a bad movie look good. It's 3 minutes edited together from a two hour movie. You know who else makes underwhelming trailers? Pixar, and those movies usually turn out amazing. I didn't like the trailer either, but I see

He co-wrote the script; he's a fan of Star Trek. He should know better than we do, and he's right. You can't judge a movie from it's trailer, because sometimes marketing gets it wrong.

Um-hm

Here's to hoping there's a good reason for an antique dirt bike being in the movie ó other than Justin Lin couldn't figure out how to squeeze a muscle car into a scene.

maybe the Captain had it on the enterprise so he could use it if he ever has a week off and they happen to be on a planet on his FIVE YEAR MISSION!!!! Sometimes I wonder if people think for more than 2 seconds.

Dead concept? Just make it look like Guardians of the Galaxy.

I'm still looking forward to the film, but that trailer was not a good first impression to make. It seems on one hand they want to make this new film closer to the spirit of what Trek is all about, yet at the same time make it a popular blockbuster film for all audiences. However, to me those 2 goals do not align. Maybe they can pull it off. I am looking forward to seeing the other crew members more involved, especially Urban as Bones who always seems to steal any scene he is in.
