The path to paradise begins in hell in the latest Alien: Covenant trailer

02.28.2017

Alien: Covenant Ridley Scott Katherine Waterston

Earlier today Twentieth Century Fox released a new poster for ALIEN: COVENANT which revealed that a new trailer for the Ridley Scott film would land tomorrow. However, the trailer seems to have leaked online early which prompted Fox to release the official goods a little sooner than they had planned. Even though PROMETHEUS may not have lived up to my rather lofty expectations, I still have high hopes for Scott's sequel, especially with what seems to be a return to the more horrific and suspenseful elements of the ALIEN franchise. Take a look at the new trailer for ALIEN: COVENANT for yourselves!

Even though this trailer dropped a little early, we still have some ALIEN: COVENANT goodies in store for you tomorrow as we can finally share our experiences from the set of ALIEN: COVENANT. Look for those set-visit articles right here on JoBlo tomorrow morning!

The official synopsis for ALIEN: COVENANT:

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS -- and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

ALIEN: COVENANT will burst into theaters on May 19, 2017.

Don't forget

How good the Prometheus trailers were. They didn't even have to show you the the end of the movie and that was absolute trash. I'm still gonna be there opening night.

Liked what I saw, although I might agree that they should have saved the last 15 seconds for the film. I'm ok with a big action set piece in the end, but I want this to be scary and tense for most of the run-time. We already knew that outside of Waterson, Fassbender, and McBride there's probably little chance anyone else will make it to the last 20 min of this flick. I'm cool with that because this is the Alien franchise and that usually tends to happen with this series. Just have the

Just have the interactions and character behavior have some semblance of rationality and I won't flip out like Prometheus. I can't handle stupid behavior in a movie that aspires to be cerebral, especially from characters that are supposed to be intelligent. I can watch it in normal dumb teen slasher movies all day long, but this is Alien: the A minus dark house movie.

I actually liked the marketing up to this point. Now comes the "Don't get too comfortable with these people, most of them will die" trailer. We know that, but we don't need to know any of their spacecraft blows up. That's the kind of spoiler you save for the movie.

They postponed Alien 5 for this?!!

If Ridley came up with something really special i would love to see it but this just looks like its been done a thousand times before. It really looks like a remake blend of Alien and Prometheus. Hope i'm wrong.

Not to mention the fact that now there's no chance of Bill Paxton reprising his role. Hell, it might not ever get greenlit because Sigorney Weaver feels she's too old for the part by the time Ridley is done fucking around.

Showed too much and already too much CGI for an Alien film. The CGI will just become a distraction.

Very nice.

I am very happy with this footage. I'm movie trailer'd out, though, with this one. What I've seen is plenty so I won't spoil any more for myself. It's an overload of imagery, for certain, but I expect there to be much more revealed in the final product when it hits theaters in May. Thankfully, the appearance of David is shrouded in mystery the most.

Like someone mentioned below. This is how I was hoping Prometheus would've been. Although I enjoyed it after still expecting more. I definitely enjoy the familiar territory and still knowing there is a universe still worth exploring...

Should not have included the last 15 seconds.

initially, I thought the trailer did a great job at showcasing the scary atmospheric feel of the original while mixing Scott's recent desire to show a massive scale/scope of the world he's throwing the characters in. The last 15 seconds goes full-on stereotypical over-the-top action movie. From Katherine Waterston's character swinging off the side of the ship to the xenomorph going head first on the ship as it attempts to escape, I almost immediately lost interest in this.

I'll hand it to Danny McBride. He looks to be doing some fine acting for once.

Alien vs. Danny McBride

You can tell this'll just be a fun summer flick, nothing more/nothing less. Looks like a blast.

Well put. Originally, I had hoped for something scarier, a la 1979's Alien. Now I'm warming myself up to the idea of a fun and briskly-paced action/horror film. Not every Alien-related movie has to be as unnerving as Ridley Scott's original.

Didn't Ridley say something about making a trilogy starting from "Prometheus"? Yeah this one could mainly be the unpacking of a meat barge, but that shot of what looks like a citadel littered with corpses has me intrigued.

I totally agree. In trailers like this one, you're gonna see a lot of familiar territory (which in this case, personally, is not a drawback), but there will always be a few perplexing/startling images to mull over.

beating it to death? This is the 2nd "Alien" movie in the past 20 years, not counting AvP movies. Which I don't think anyone really includes in "Alien" canon.
And they DID change it up. Have you seen "Prometheus"? The "alien" was only in the last 5 minutes, and it sounds like that was a last minute change, because so many people were upset that there wouldn't be any xenomorphs in it. And most people didn't like it, because....it wasn't like the other "Alien" movies.

@ucfro. I didn't like Prometheus because everyone acted retarded in it. Hopefully this is better.

(Throws money at screen).

This looks amazing and on par with the first two Alien films.

Could have done without the last 10 seconds (which I imagine is the film's climax), but overall I thought this trailer presented a better movie than the last one. The shower sex scene interrupted by the big bad was a little too Friday The 13th. I hope Ridley didn't think people not appreciating his cerebral attempt at an Alien movie meant he had to take the complete opposite approach: just making a slasher movie with xenomorphs.

Alien isn't 2001 Space Odyssey, it's a horror film. It's format is rooted in atmosphere, dread and death.

Idk

I just don't think it looks good. The premise and the first 45 seconds of the trailer actually looks intriguing, but then it devolves into generic, seen it before territory. It just feels like it's cashing in on the Alien name. Maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Exactly what I was thinking. Seen this movie already. I have also admittedly never been a fan of Ridley Scott with the exception of three of his films. I really feel often with most things less is more.

Kevyn, I'm curious what the three films are? I used to love Scott's stuff but now the only three I really love are The Duelists, Blade Runner and Legend (that last one mainly because of childhood nostalgia, not because I actually think it's that great). Truth be told, I actually am not the biggest fan of the original "Alien" I just really, really like Cameron's sequel (which incidentally, is one of only two Cameron films I really love, the other being T1).

Luke319, I dig Alien, Bladerunner and The Martian. I loved Aliens as well. One of the best sequels ever made. Having said that I'm not Scott's biggest fan I do think Alien and Bladerunner are two of the best horror and si-fi (repectively) of all time.
