The trailer for Here Comes the Boom features a pumped Kevin James getting his butt kicked

I don't know many people who would consider themselves Kevin James fans. I mean, if you have seen PAUL BLART: MALL COP, ZOOKEEPER, or GROWN UPS, you pretty much know the guy is a chubby dude who falls down and makes confused faces yet somehow still gets Leslie Bibb, Rosario Dawson, Winona Ryder, and Maria Bello in the sack. I pretty much write the guy off the moment I see his name on a project.

But, when the trailer for HERE COMES THE BOOM was released, I took a chance. I was fully prepared to write a scathing story about it. But, I actually liked it.

Plot: A high school biology teacher moonlights as a mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to save the school's music program.

I am not an MMA fan whatsoever but this film struck the right chords with me. James is very subdued (don't worry, cinephiles. He still falls down a lot), but he actually looks like he is taking the role seriously this time. The movie trailer looks like a good mix of teacher/sports success stories. James looks like he gained some muscle for the role, too.

Directed by Happy Madison mainstay Frank Coraci (THE WEDDING SINGER), HERE COMES THE BOOM also stars the absolutely gorgeous Salma Hayek, Henry Winkler (also gorgeous), Greg Germann, and Charice.

HERE COMES THE BOOM opens October 12, 2012.

Alright, it's time for a lifestyle change. Kevin James has better looking arms in this film than I do. I am putting down this beer and getting a gym membership tomorrow. Okay I'll finish off the case first, then start. Anyway, I was surprised I didn't hate this trailer. Won't see it anyway, but good for him to do something with even a little gravitas.

I think the only reason this doesn't look like pure crap

Is because Adam Sandler has nothing to do with this. I think...

I was skeptical at first, but you know this looks pretty good! I like Kevin with this kinda bad boy I don't care about the rules attitude. He reminds me of Judd Nelson's character from The Breakfast Club. This just might be good!

Looks surprisingly decent...

It doesn't seem WAY too over the top at least. The characters seem somewhat relateable which is a good sign.
I just have this weird feeling that at some point in the movie Henry Winkler's character dies or has some kind of health scare and then it inspires Kevin James to win.
Who knows though.

"Warrior" should have won most over-hyped film of last year, but I did like this trailer.

Okay, this trailer gets points for taking the subject semi-seriously (easier to laugh when you can identify with the people a little), not incorporating "Here Comes the Boom" in its soundtrack, and for not feeling the need to advertise just how hot Salma Hayek is. I think she actually looks hotter in that trailer than she has in a while.

I know a lot of people hate/dislike James, mostly because of the bad movies mentioned above by Mr. Maidy, but the man has talent. He's a good actor and he has cracked me up consistently with his performance in the very underappreciated sitcom; The King of Queens.

This trailer looks quite good, and I'm really glad that he finally seems to have made a right choice film-wise.

Erm...

Looks like the Asylum's version of Warrior. Pass.
