Trailer and poster for the YA adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, starring Lily Collins

The competition for the next big Young Adult novel adaptation is going to war in 2013 as the TWILIGHT saga comes to a close this week, leaving a big, gaping hole for some teenage fantasy films to be filled.  One of those contenders is the adaptation of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, starring Lily Collins, Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and Jared Harris.  It doesn’t look like the worst thing in the world and at least has a little “fight” in it.

Take a look:

It’s kind of like HARRY POTTER meets ANGELS AND DEMONS meets THE HUNGER GAMES.  I guess there could be worse comparisons and this does have a decent cast lined up, so there’s a little promise for those not automatically inclined to this type of fare.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

When her mom is attacked and taken from their home in New York City by a demon, a seemingly ordinary teenage girl, Clary Fray, finds out truths about her past and bloodline on her quest to get her back, that changes her entire life.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, directed by Harald Zwart (THE KARATE KID remake, AGENT CODY BANKS, THE PINK PANTHER 2…oy vey) and based on the YA novel by Cassandra Clare is set to open on August 23, 2013.
