Weekend Box Office Report: June 19-21, 2015

06.21.2015

Jurassic World chomps on #1 again!

Rampaging dinosaurs remained the big draw at the box office this weekend, keeping JURASSIC WORLD on top for a second weekend with an estimated $102 million!

Although it dropped around 51% from its record-setting opening weekend, the sequel had the second-biggest second weekend ever (close behind THE AVENGERS' $103 million). It's already scratching at a $400 million 10-day domestic total (also a new record) and is inching toward $1 billion worldwide.

At its current pace, JURASSIC WORLD is all but guaranteed to surpass Marvel's AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (now in ninth with $449.3 million) to become the highest grossing release of the year... so far.

Opening in second place was Pixar's latest INSIDE OUT with $91 million. While the animated emotions couldn't defeat the scaly spectacle of JURASSIC WORLD, it did set a record for biggest opening that wasn't at #1.

On top of that, INSIDE OUT was the second-biggest Pixar opening, behind only TOY STORY 3's $110.3 million debut back in 2010, and ahead of sequel MONSTERS UNIVERSITY's $82.4 million opening. It also collected an additional $41 million from international audiences.

Critics were definitely in the headspace of joy with a 98% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers were also delighted and gave it a straight 'A' CinemaScore.

Melissa McCarthy's R-rated action comedy SPY was in third place with another $10.5 million, followed by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's disaster movie SAN ANDREAS in fourth with $8.2 million as it shook past $400 million worldwide.

In fifth place was the new drama DOPE with a $6 million opening weekend. While the R-rated coming-of-age story couldn't compete with the expensive summer blockbuster material, it was a critical fave (90% on Rotten Tomatoes) and received an 'A-' CinemaScore from audiences.

The low-budget horror prequel INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 was in sixth with $4.1 million, and the singing sequel PITCH PERFECT 2 dropped to seventh with $3.2 million as it has accumulated a $272 million global total.

The list was filled out with MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and Disney's TOMORROWLAND. Outside the chart, the ENTOURAGE guys waved goodbye after two weeks in the Top 10, along with the Beach Boys biopic LOVE & MERCY.

Next weekend brings back Mark Wahlberg and his talking bear for more R-rated comedy in TED 2, while the war dog MAX goes for the hearts of moviegoers.

I believe this is the first Pixar film to not open at #1. That's a little disappointing (although obviously a $91M opening is nothing to scoff at). I'm happy for Jurassic World since that movie was cool, but I hoped Inside Out would have come out a little bit ahead this weekend to keep their streak in tact.

I thought about that... but qould you rather be number 1 at 91 mil and just another sub 100 mil number 1... or at 91 mil being the biggest ever movie to not open at 1... that record holds and keeps ppl talking about the record. Plus the number is all that matters, and it isvpuxars 2nd best opening ever!

Good for Jurassic World, I really enjoyed it & thought it was a fun, suspenseful & action packed. I saw the movie last wednesday & the theatre was packed, so yea I got to enjoy it with a crowd. It really deserves to be a hit & I don't care what others on here say, because my 37 year old ass loved it, what do I give a shit about trying to sound "cool" on the internet.

I'm pretty much the same age as you and I enjoyed the sh** out of Jurassic World. It may start out a bit slow but once it's ready it won't let you go until the end.

Let's face it, Pixar is so well known for quality that their films are almost considered part of a series.
Never thought Jurassic World would be this big a hit, with some good info starting to come out maybe Terminator will be another series brought back from the dead.

What is the early word on Terminator? I have my ticket already, but the trailers and PG13 rating have my expectations severely tempered.

I wonder if Universal is being modest again and that JW actually broke Avengers 2nd weekend record as well

You should add to the post that INSIDE OUT has the biggest opening EVER for an original (non-sequel, non-franchise) film, which is a pretty big deal. It defied expectations just as JURASSIC WORLD did last weekend, seeing as how most people though it would only open to $60M.

How original, there was this little show called Herman's Head? Either way it's a move aimed at kids, they always do well at the box office.

My closest theater is playing JW on 15 3D screens and 5 Regular screens. Funny that.

Wow...Jurassic Has legs

I have to see this film because it is dividing my friends. Some of them loved it and some of them despised it. I am going to have to check it out to see where I fall.

I saw "Inside Out" on Friday after work. What a wonderful, innovative , creative, and special movie that turned out to be. Any slump that you felt Pixar fell into will be put at ease after you see the new film. Just 100% outstanding work.

Inside/Out should be a must see for any psycho student !
And wait until you see The Little Prince, for another amazing take on childhood.
For the other side of animation get ready for the absolute madness fun that is Minions (and don't forget to stay until the end of the end credits)...
2015 seems to be a great year for animation, so far...

Oscars 2016

Ian McKellen will get a nod for Mr Holmes, and deservedly so.

51% is a great drop

Unless I'm reading it wrong, you write it as though 51% is a huge drop. That's actually pretty damn good for a movie of this size, considering how much it made opening wknd.

Exactly. It's pretty impressive. For some context, Man of Steel dropped 64% in its second weekend after a $116 million opening weekend, and Guardians of the Galaxy dropped 55% after a $94 million opening.
