Weekend Box Office Report: June 19-21, 2015

Jurassic World chomps on #1 again!

Rampaging dinosaurs remained the big draw at the box office this weekend, keeping JURASSIC WORLD on top for a second weekend with an estimated $102 million!

Although it dropped around 51% from its record-setting opening weekend, the sequel had the second-biggest second weekend ever (close behind THE AVENGERS’ $103 million). It’s already scratching at a $400 million 10-day domestic total (also a new record) and is inching toward $1 billion worldwide.

At its current pace, JURASSIC WORLD is all but guaranteed to surpass Marvel's AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (now in ninth with $449.3 million) to become the highest grossing release of the year… so far.

Opening in second place was Pixar's latest INSIDE OUT with $91 million. While the animated emotions couldn't defeat the scaly spectacle of JURASSIC WORLD, it did set a record for biggest opening that wasn't at #1.

On top of that, INSIDE OUT was the second-biggest Pixar opening, behind only TOY STORY 3's $110.3 million debut back in 2010, and ahead of sequel MONSTERS UNIVERSITY's $82.4 million opening. It also collected an additional $41 million from international audiences.

Critics were definitely in the headspace of joy with a 98% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers were also delighted and gave it a straight 'A' CinemaScore.

Melissa McCarthy's R-rated action comedy SPY was in third place with another $10.5 million, followed by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's disaster movie SAN ANDREAS in fourth with $8.2 million as it shook past $400 million worldwide.

In fifth place was the new drama DOPE with a $6 million opening weekend. While the R-rated coming-of-age story couldn't compete with the expensive summer blockbuster material, it was a critical fave (90% on Rotten Tomatoes) and received an 'A-' CinemaScore from audiences.

The low-budget horror prequel INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 was in sixth with $4.1 million, and the singing sequel PITCH PERFECT 2 dropped to seventh with $3.2 million as it has accumulated a $272 million global total.

The list was filled out with MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and Disney's TOMORROWLAND. Outside the chart, the ENTOURAGE guys waved goodbye after two weeks in the Top 10, along with the Beach Boys biopic LOVE & MERCY.

Next weekend brings back Mark Wahlberg and his talking bear for more R-rated comedy in TED 2, while the war dog MAX goes for the hearts of moviegoers.
