What did you think of...Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation?

08.01.2015

After almost 20 years, the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise has steadily remained one of the most entertaining (and lucrative) franchises in Hollywood. Star Tom Cruise has created a cinematic goldmine in portraying IMF agent Ethan Hunt, who defies all manner of convuluted plotting, insane stunts, and badass action to deliver time the goods time and again for the spy series, based on the 1960's TV show. Each installment offers a new vision from a new director, with the likes of Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, Brad Bird, and now Christopher McQuarrie in the latest installment, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION.

Most folks would agree that the franchise has gotten better and better with each new installment and many are having the same conversation yet again for ROGUE NATION, saying that the bar has once again been set. Currently sitting at a certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, expectations are high for the newest entry and it seems like they'll be adequately met. Our own Chris Bumbray gave it an 8/10, saying the film is "...a roller-coaster ride from start-to-finish and a film that will likely please even the most jaded action fan." With a recommendation like that, we'll accept this mission.

Great addition to the franchise. Very much in line with De Palma's original with great action set pieces but a lot more heavy on the intrigue.

The Best Mission Impossible Yet! Was not expecting it's style to follow quite so well in the footsteps of De Palma's original! The MI sequel I was wanting back with MI:2 & MI:3!

I was not a fan of MI:2 (talk about a huge departure from all the others), and the ads for MI:3 had me excited for drifting away from a John Woo style MI film and back to what looked like a similar style of De Palma's 1996 film. However, MI:3 fell a little flat at times and ended up not being the sequel I was really excited for. Ghost Protocol worked extremely well in taking MI to all new heights and levels of excitement. Rogue Nation, is the MI sequel I was expecting to see back with MI:3!

Rogue Nation, is the MI sequel I was expecting to see back with MI:3! It's a superb return to a similar style game of cat and mouse as in the original. The opening credits are very similar. The settings & locations all feel familiar to the original (especially a certain London chase scene through foggy streets, just like Prague in the original). The score finally sounds very identical to Danny Elfman's score back in 1996. The car and bike chase is so much better in Rogue Nation compared to MI:2's chase scene, by looking a lot less staged and more realistic. Christopher McQuarrie's direction was not only well influenced by Brian De Palma, Brad Bird, and JJ Abrams, but I also sensed a little touch of Brian Singer style here in Rogue Nation's suspense scenes. Remember, Christopher McQuarrie is the Oscar winning writer of The Usual Suspects. I was expecting to enjoy Rogue Nation, I was not expecting to walk out saying, "It's the best in the Mission Impossible series. Yes! It's even better than Ghost Protocol!" Easily an 8 out of 10, and a ***1/2 out of ****

It was great.

Loved it. Great use of the team, like in the last one. Can't wait for the next one.

Good Overall

Its nice to see a movie use real stunts and not have to rely on tons of CGI to entertain. Ghost Protocol is still the best one in my opinion though

Uhh, what movie did you watch? I saw a heavy use of CGI in the motorcycle scene when they're going between the cars, and when he went in reverse and flipped the car. Yeah, pretty bad CGI I might add, and I don't think they were real stunts in those scenes.

Hey Pazuzu_Guerilla
Yes, there was CGI in the movie. News flash, there's going to be CGI in almost every film, but Rogue Nation was not heavily soaked in CGI. The bike chase, looked fantastic, and while there may have been a CGI shot here or there I think you'd might be surprised in finding out how much of that scene was not CGI.

the best mission by far

It was a pure adrenaline rush, the action, the comedy, the fights, the chases, it was an all out intense and entertaining crazy ride. I really dont know how theyre going to top this one but man this was just so much freakin fun.

Was totally looking forward to this....

But it was so disappointing, honestly. The story sucked and was half-assed, if anything. The villian was truly awful and probably the worst of the series. And the action set pieces looked pretty bad effects-wise, especially that motorcycle scene in particular or when he flips the car going in reverse. Too over the top even for this series. At least make it look real like Mad Max. Overall, I give it a 6/10. Doesn't come close to Ghost Protocol and is more along the lines of M:I 2. Which that one

@dkev - I really wanted to enjoy it, just couldn't.

@Krypto Cookies - Incorrect about what? My opinion? You liked it, I didn't. Agree to disagree, but don't act like it was the best entry in the franchise, because it wasn't.

Loved it. Though not as much as Ghost Protocol, and as impressive the hanging off a plane bit was, it's not a patch on Burj Khalifa tower scene.
Still, great movie, a thoroughly enjoyable time.

When does Ethan join the Avengers as the Indestructible Man?

I haven't seen the movie yet but this guy survives the most ridiculous shit. Hanging off of planes and being able to talk, flipping in cars, getting rockets fired at him and blowing up 20 feet away only knocks him back 10 feet and doesn't leave any marks. He is the original Avenger.

I thought it was very good and I enjoyed myself a lot. However, having watched the trailer I was hoping to get to know the syndicate members - this anti-IMF team better. I feel that if they had been fleshed out with charismatic actors we could have had something really special with this premise. So I liked it but there were some missed opportunities for me.

Daddy Like

So good.
I don't care what anyone says about Cruise, he is the best in the game for consistency and quality of product. He truly loves making movies and entertaining audiences, and it shows.
I love that guy. And this movie was the tits.

Why does Ethan always have to prove his loyalty?

I loved it, but I was just wondering why it seems that he's never trusted, he's done enough to prove his trustworthy.

Good question. But perhaps the perfect concept for an actor whose private life associated with a lunatic sect. The underdog.

Missions are top secret, and the IMF keeps blowing things up. The public and governing bodies mostly just see the latter because of the former. So I understand the trust issues.

Better than the fourth installment!

I liked it, it was very entertaining! A great film, I wouldn't go that far, but of course this isn't a film I'd go to to find a great piece of cinema. That being said, this was much better than the last Mission Impossible. Better pacing, better story, and a great actor for the lead antagonist. I feel he really steals the show. I'm glad he is getting more recognition and working up from smaller rolls from films like Prometheus. The third Mission Impossible will always be my favorite, but this

The third Mission Impossible will always be my favorite, but this film came very close as far as the franchise is concerned. I'd give it a recommendation with a rating of 3 1/2 stars out of five. The film starts and keeps you entertained the whole time and for the first time you feel like these characters are in real danger. Give is a shot; see it for yourself. I've read the next installment is already set to begin filming in October; if this is true, let's hope they can uphold this standard they have recently set with this new release!

Differing opinions. I personally had no problem with the villain, since he posed a real threat and his methods were hard for Ethan Hunt to counter. Christopher McQuarrie, in an interview, mentioned that there is no singular villain, though. Hunt is being targeted by several entities, all of them intelligent agencies. I still don't understand what makes a good villain. There seems to be a villain complaint in every movie.

It was good

It had a tough act to follow. In my opinion, "Ghost Protocol" is still one of the best action movies of the last few years. I think it may survive the next five years for my personal top ten of the decade. "Rogue Nation" had some great action sequences and shows that Cruise is still the man. The villain was the weak part of the movie and it was a bit long. Outside of that, it is the better of the movies that have been released this summer.

Given that there was only 2 good movies this summer, that's not saying much.
