What did you think of...Sin City: A Dame To Kill For?

Aug. 21, 2014by:

After a near ten-year wait, the sequel to Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's SIN CITY is finally here. The biggest question is; Was it worth the wait? SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR brings to life some of Miller's tales from the comics as well as some content made specifically for the film with much of the original cast returning to partake, including Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Powers Booth, and Rosario Dawson. Replacing some key roles are Josh Brolin, Jamie Chung, and Dennis Haysbert with new blood additions including Eva Green, Ray Liotta, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Any way you slice it, the cast is top notch. Hopefully, the film fits the same bill and isn't a day late and a dollar short of capitalizing on the original's coolness. Our own JimmyO found it to be somewhere in the middle, giving it a score of 6/10 with Rotten Tomatoes still hovering in the rotten percentages.

Now that you've returned to SIN CITY, we want to hear what YOU thought of it! You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile. Was it just as fun and cool as the first film or is too little too late? Is there room for more SIN CITY tales after this or is it time to move out? Let us know below!

Rotten Tomatoes: 119 reviews, avg score: 43%
Movie Fan Central: 4 reviews, avg score: 6.2/10

Hate that it's bombing...

I liked it, but didn't love it. Wasn't as fresh or visceral as the original. Still, I had a good time with it, and Eva Green my God, I'd rest my head on her dirty pillows anytime. It sucks that it tanked so hard, I think the nine year wait killed people's interest in a sequel. Instead of more Sin City, we got more Transformers and Ninja Turtles to look forward to. A fucking shame.

Way too long wait for a sequel.
A nice sleazy ride.
What the hell was this doing being released in the summer though?
Too dark a film, probably would have done better in Oct-Nov .

On the fence.

The returning characters were good, but I was confused on a few things. The timeline for the two movies is screwy because a character that dies in this one was clearly alive at the end of Marv's story in the first one, so it doesn't make sense. Also Eva Green is horrible. The woman can't act and is only worth anything from the neck down. And was Jeremy Piven supposed to be Michael Madsen's character? The makeup was horrible too and didn't match the first. I liked a lot of what I saw but those

A mixed bag

When Sin City was first released, it appealed to both the fans of the graphic novels as well as having an artistic draw to it. Using shot-for-shot recreations of the graphic novel panels was brilliant and different and the stark black and white look with the color contrasts for specific characters was incredibly interesting and I can appreciate it from that standpoint. However, I don't think that same draw is there almost 10 years later with A Dame To Kill For. So I'm sort of torn with my

I enjoyed it for what it was, and props to the actors for embracing their characters. However I didn't quiet understand why they choose to create 2 new stories for the movie, and then give so little time to the actual stories pulled from the graphic novel. Entertaining yes, but I think it's a little too late for what it was trying to accomplish. And sadly, opening in 8th place supports that idea.

Oh and I definitely LOVED that Eva was naked 90% of her scenes!

I thought it was pretty good. Enjoyed it overall but not as good as the first one. I knew that this story line was supposed to be more of a prequel but couldn't understand why they didn't get Clive for a cameo and why Hartigan and Nancy's story line was the only sequel storyline. But still good and wouldn't mind if they still decide to do the 3rd movie.

Was it horrible? No. Was it perfect? No. Could it have been better? Yes. If you're a fan of the first, this movie is worth at least a one time watch if only for seeing what happened to these characters. I feel many of the stories were either too long or too short. For example, I would have loved to have seen a greater character arc for Joseph Gordon Levitt's character. I think he did his thing but it was just too short a story. Some actors brought their A game, Rosario had so much fun in that

Some actors brought their A game, Rosario had so much fun in that role. It shows. While others I feel just phoned it in where it felt too over the top and cheesy. Josh Brolin was ok as Dwight. Like someone else said, doesn't make sense why Clive couldn't make a cameo. They tried to make Josh's face look skinny like Clive's while the rest of his body was still stocky. It just looked bad. And in terms of Marv still being alive? I think the stories from the first intertwine with these stories. I would have to watch the 1st again to see if Marv should even be here. Anyway... Like I said, if you're a fan, watch it. Just don't expect much because it is subpar. It's just missing something.

Meh.

The movie wasn't as bad as I feared but it wasn't very good either. The Eva Green/Josh Brolin segment was good (although why they chose prosthetics over a Clive Owen cameo is hard to understand) but the JGL segment was just okay and the Alba segment was just bad. Not only is she as miscast as she was in the first film, it's pretty obvious that Marv should be dead by the time these events took place. You're making the first sequel of film that was famous for copying shot for shot some panels in

That's bad. Very bad.

Another summer 2014 letdown

Where I loved the first film, this one just seemed like a cheaper, weaker effort. Even the make-up and FX seemed weaker than the original film. Jessica Alba was just as horrid as she was in the first film, except with more screen time. And what was with the ending? First, Marv's character should be dead, second they literally just ended the film. even the final graphics didn't seem finished. 5/10, and that is generous.

2.5/4 Stars

It was alright. I thought Eva Green, Power Boothe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt stole the show. Not as satisfying overall as the first Sin City in terms of substance. But I think if you enjoyed the first film you will like at least some parts of this sequel.

On the plus side, Mickey Rourke is still perfect as Marv, and the visuals are still very unique and cool. On the downside, even though it's rated R, it felt watered down compared to the first. Instead of catching and mutilating a child rapist, and finding a stealthy cannibal killer, we have a woman seducing men for personal gain *yawn* and one character's revenge being nothing more than beating the villain at poker... I loved the first, and I was glad to see a sequel, but I was a little

No too bad, not great either

So, I've been such a huge fan of the first Sin City ever since it came out 9 years ago, I was honestly under the impression that this sequel was never going to happen. Even when I saw those photos of the filming of the movie, I was still thinking that I wasn't going to believe it was coming until I saw it with my own eyes. Well, I finally saw the movie last night and after all these years the results are...not too bad.
First, I must say I was truly nervous at the way this movie was marketed

First, I must say I was truly nervous at the way this movie was marketed and released. Considering thr cast and the love for the first movie, the fact that Dimention dumped this movie at the end of August with hardly any form of an ad campaign made me think that they were trying to distance themselves from a complete disaster. I mean, I went to the 9:00 show last night, and me and my group were the only people there.
As for the actual movie...it certainly was not a disaster, but it was nowwhere near as good as the original film.
The segment based on the comic material, with Eva Green and Josh Brolin worked the best and was probably the closest in quality to the first Sin City. The original stories that were written specifically for this movie, while interesting at times, just didn't feel the same.
In the end, it looked cool, was full of cool actors, had cool music, and was enjoyable overall...I just have a feeling money wise this movie will be a disaster at the box office.

It was... ok. It felt like it lacked some substance and was kind of disjointed and uneven. Definitely not as solid as the first one but still entertaining. Worth it for the tits and violence. 6.5/10

A 5 out of 10. The gimmick is great bit it's been 9 years since we were first wowed by it and any gimmick can only carry you so far. So much of the dialogue, in trying to sound hard boiled, just comes off sounding silly as all get-out. Ava Lord as a character is pretty much "I have boobs, you must obey." Powers Boothe was clearly having a blast though and he was an entertaining villain.

With boobs like those, I will obey. And I'm a happily married man, just like Mort!

I thought it was pretty weak. Eva Green and Rourke carried the movie, and that's in part to my having a favorable bias towards the Marv character (and Eva's tits). The rest of the [link] didn't engage me much. Bit too flimsy. But, having said that, it's still good fun. It probably just seems worse than it is by comparison to it's predecessor. It's a solid rental.
