Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was released a little over a week ago, but the reviews… haven’t exactly been kind, which took screenwriter Jeff Loveness by surprise.

To be honest, those reviews took me by surprise,” Jeff Loveness told The Daily Beast in an interview. “I was in a pretty low spot… Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the …?’Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania joins Eternals as the only two Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that have earned a Rotten Tomatometer status on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite those negative reviews being a little crushing, Jeff Loveness remains proud of his work. “I’m really proud of what I wrote for Jonathan [Majors] and Michelle Pfeiffer,” Loveness said. “I thought that was good stuff, you know? And so I was just despondent, and I was really sad about it.

Reviews certainly aren’t everything, and it’s important to note that the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is much higher than its critics’ score. Jeff Loveness told The Daily Beast that he went attended a screening of Quantumania after the reviews had came out and found the audience to be very appreciative of what he was trying to do. “I went to [a showing] of the movie after the reviews were in and the movie was out,” Loveness said. “And an audience was laughing, and it was one of those Sullivan’s Travels, ‘watching the movie with the prisoners’ moments… I actually tried to make [Quantumania] feel more like a throwback ’90s adventure comedy than anything. I wanted it to feel like the way Men in Black is funny and goofy, but it also has real stakes and real character motives.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has already grossed over $363 million worldwide, but it has seen a 69% decrease in ticket sales during its second week, the largest drop of any MCU movie. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own JimmyO and let us know what you thought of the film as well. Does Quantumania deserve the negative reviews?
