Some of you guys may remember the news of the upcoming sci-fi thriller DEBUG that we covered just a few weeks ago — with genre vet David Hewlett taking his talent’s behind the camera. Now, we’ve got word that the film has just wrapped principal photography, so expect much more from this in the coming weeks. Below you can read an all new detailed plot for the flick which was written and directed by Hewlett.
Deep space. Six young hackers on a grueling work release program attempt to clear out – debug – the computer systems of a massive derelict space freighter. They quickly fall prey to the ship’s vengeful artificial intelligence, a program that would kill to be human. As the fractious team is forced to match wits with this rogue program, they discover that the ship holds a deadly secret, and a fate far worse than death.

Mixing deep space with computers bent on becoming human is no doubt a recipe for some top notch horror. Hewlett drew inspiration from one of cinemas most famous computer villains in Hal from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Check out what he had to say:
My father took me to see Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 for my 10th birthday. I have been enthralled by Hal, and the possibility of sentient artificial intelligence, ever since. Debug is 2001 from Hal’s perspective.
DEBUG will mark Hewlett’s second feature film and stars Jeananne Goossen, Jason Momoa, Adam Butcher, Kjartan Hewitt, Sidney Leeder, Jaydn Wong, Adrian Holmes and Kyle Mac. DEBUG was filmed at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, with release slated for early 2014.
