Focus Features and LAIKA Animation partner for three more films

Focus Features and LAIKA may not be setting the box office on fire with the films they have released to date, but they certainly have won over critics. LAIKA Animation recently inked a three picture deal with Focus which means we will be seeing their unique brand of filmmaking for a few years to come.

LAIKA CEO Travis Knight issued this statement.

“Focus and LAIKA are kindred spirits,” said Mr. Knight. “Over eight years and three films we’ve forged an incredible bond over a shared love for, and commitment to, bold, distinctive, and enduring stories. Peter and his superlative team have created a welcoming home for original voices and enriching, challenging filmmaking. They’re the bravest studio in the world. We look forward to many ongoing cinematic adventures with our Focus/Universal family. The best is yet to come.”

In addition to THE BOXTROLLS, Laika and Focus partnered on both CORALINE and PARANORMAN over the last five years. All three films have been highlights in the world of feature animation and bring something that CGI and traditional animation cannot. They currently have two films in development: WILDWOOD and GOBLINS.

While studios have been quick to nab up and coming animation houses like Pixar and DreamWorks in the past, LAIKA still remains small enough that they can be a little edgier with their filmmaking choices, resulting in some of the best movies, animated or otherwise, each year.

THE BOXTROLLS is now playing.
