Interview: Thomasin McKenzie Talks Last Night in Soho

Thomasin McKenzie is wonderfully talented. The actress shined in her beautiful work in Jojo Rabbit, and she gave arguably the best performance in M. Night’s Shyamalan’s latest, Old. And now, Ms. McKenzie takes on the leading role in Edgar Wright’s fantastic new thriller, Last Night in Soho. In the film, Thomasin plays Eloise, an aspiring fashion designer who magically discovers a mysterious girl named Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy). The strange thing about the situation is that Eloise somehow finds herself in the 1960s. The film is currently in theatres, and as I’ve said in our recent chat with Mr. Wright, you should go into this gorgeous flick with a brilliant soundtrack completely open. Don’t read more than you have to.

I recently spoke to Thomasin once again this year – our last conversation was for Old. It’s always wonderful to talk with this kind and talented actress. She opened up about working with Edgar and how the music element and the Sixties played into her work. What is truly remarkable about her performance is how effortlessly she carries the film. Certainly, Anya Taylor-Joy is stunning, as are both Diana Rigg and Terrance Stamp, but Thomasin is the heart of Last Night in Soho. If you don’t care about her, the film can’t work. Thankfully, you do care, and she builds on this fascinating character. If you haven’t had the chance, I highly recommend you seek out Mr. Wright’s latest. The music is excellent, and the twisted tale (read our review) brings the Sixties to life.
