Jack Black awaits return of Bowser, has idea for Super Mario Bros. sequel

Jack Black – who played Bowser in the recent Mario Bros. animated movie – thinks the sequel should be a musical.

We all know that The Super Mario Bros. was one of the biggest box office hits of the year, even shooting like Bullet Bill towards the front of the all-time worldwide haul for an animated film. Yet, surprisingly, a sequel hasn’t officially been announced. But Jack Black – who voiced Bowser – has an idea of how it could play out when it finally gets the greenlight.

Jack Black told Variety (on their Awards Circuit Podcast) that while he has yet to hear anything from Illumination, he does hope he can reprise Bowser. “It has been radio silence…The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business.” With that, Black said, “I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2.”

Jack Black’s minor pitch could definitely resonate, as Bowser’s showstopping number “Peaches” (co-written by Black) proved to be a massive hit, even going on to earn a Golden Globe nomination – and we wouldn’t be surprised if it earned an Oscar nod, too, if not just to see Black perform at the ceremony. On the ballad, Black said, “They sent me a 30-second nugget of an idea, and it was hilarious. So I fleshed it out, added some lyrics and melody, and they loved it. And by God, they put it in the film. I couldn’t believe they did.”

Jack Black has discussed the potential for a Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel before, suggesting that if Bowser is in fact done then Wario could replace the Koopa as the main villain. While Black pushed for Pedro Pascal for the role, he might actually be better fit for a live-action take on the video game

In addition to the “Peaches” Golden Globe nod, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also up for Best Animated Feature and the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The awards will be held on January 7th.

Who or what would you want to see in a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie? Should Jack Black return as Bowser? Would a musical work? Give us your thoughts below.
