Lizzie McGuire reboot has been scrapped by Disney+

Lizzie McGuire, reboot, Disney+, Hilary Duff

The saga of the Lizzie McGuire revival has concluded as it appears as though Hilary Duff and Disney+ have scrapped the series. The new series was slated to pick up as Hilary Duff’s title character was just about to turn 30, and follow her as she navigated the ups and downs of adulthood with a little help from her old friends, some new ones, her well-meaning family, and her 13-year-old alter-ego in animated form.

The revival got started last year and production on several episodes were already underway when series creator Terri Minsky was removed, and it later emerged that both Duff and Minsky had wanted to do a more adult version of the series while Disney had wanted something that would appeal to kids and families. They tried to make the new approach work, but Hilary Duff released a statement on Instagram today that they've decided to throw in the towel if they can't get it right.

I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life. I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere tyring to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.

In their own statement, a Disney spokesperson said: "Lizzie McGuire fans have high expectations for any new stories. Unless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we’ve decided to hold off and today, we informed the cast’s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series." Farewell 30-year-old Lizzie McGuire, we hardly knew ye.
