During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Those of you familiar with the book know that one of its strengths are the characters' sense of humor in the face of insurmountable odds. This viral video, taking place before that mission, shows us that the humor of the characters have been kept intact!
The film also includes the acting prowess of Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover. As you can probably tell, this marks a different kind of Sci-Fi project for Ridley Scott (PROMETHEUS, BLADE RUNNER), but he seems to have a strong grip on the characters and you know he'll deliver on the visual side of things. There's no "sure thing" when it comes to filmmaking, but it looks like we're going to have one entertaining movie to add to Scott's Sci-Fi library when October arrives.
