Now that AVENGERS: ENDGAME has been released, the latest trailer for SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME was finally able to deal with the fallout of the latest Marvel epic, and due to its spoilery nature, the trailer was even preceded by a warning from famed spoiler Tom Holland. Now that he can finally talk about the film without inadvertently spoiling ENDGAME, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME director Jon Watts spoke with Entertainment Weekly today to break down the trailer. There will be MAJOR SPOILERS for AVENGERS ENDGAME, obviously.

As the first film to follow AVENGERS: ENDGAME, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is staged to directly address the repercussions of that film. "It was always acknowledged that our movie was going to happen right after [Endgame], and there were going to be a lot of unanswered questions and a lot of repercussions," Watts explained. "[The question was], how do we make a movie that’s in that world and deals with those stories but is also still the fun Spider-Man movie that we want to see? So that was a fun creative challenge for us." The heroes who were turned to dust during AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR were brought back to life in ENDGAME, but the world will be much different to the one they left. Although Spider-Man (Holland) and the others were brought back as though nothing had happened, five years have passed since their disappearance and those left behind have been living and aging over that time. "That’s a really weird situation to find yourself in, but it’s also something you can have a lot of fun with, too," Watts said. The director also confirmed that Ned (Jacob Batalon), MJ (Zendaya), and Flash (Tony Revolori) were all snapped, but that some of Peter's other classmates were left behind.

The SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME trailer also revealed that the use of the Infinity Gauntlet to bring back those who were snapped tore a hole in our dimension and that Quentin Beck (Jack Gyllenhaal) is actually the resident of another universe. "Endgame opened up the possibilities for a much, much larger universe," Watts teased. "All that stuff sort of converged in the perfect way for us." It remains to be seen whether or not Beck is telling the truth, but in the meantime, he will enjoy a far more friendly relationship with the wall-crawler, not unlike the relationship which Peter had with the late Tony Stark.

What I wanted to do was bring this iconic character into the world in a way that people weren’t expecting. And Mysterio as the hero is definitely something that we haven’t seen before. The idea of Spider-Man, Mysterio, and Nick Fury teaming up to take on this global threat of the Elementals was really exciting.

Speaking of Nick Fury, Jon Watts said that he's also dealing with the aftermath of AVENGERS: ENDGAME. "He’s been gone for five years, too," Watts explained. "He’s the guy who’s always known everything about everything. He’s the guy who created the Avengers, and now here he is, returning after five years and seeing a very, very different world. So that’s a situation we’ve never seen him in before. The guy who’s always been in control not having the same level of control is interesting." There's still much to be revealed about SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, but Watts is relieved not to have to carry around the INFINITY WAR/ENDGAME secrets which he's known for years. "It’s so nice that the trailer’s out and now that people have seen Endgame, I don’t have to carry this around with me," Watts laughed. "You’re always worried that you’re going to say something to the wrong person or forget that someone doesn’t know or say something to a journalist. I didn’t want Joe and Anthony Russo showing up at my house in the middle of the night!"

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME will hit theaters on July 2, 2019.
