Monsters from Netflix’s Bird Box revealed in new images

**SPOILERS FOR BIRD BOX BELOW**

So-so reactions be dammed; BIRD BOX is a bona fide hit for Netflix, with millions and millions and more millions of viewers streaming the new thriller. Anyone who has seen the movie about mysterious creatures that cause people who look at them to kill themselves (hence Sandra Bullock in a blindfold) knows you never actually see this terrifying entity, but now you can take that leap with some new, BTS images of one of the creature’s forms. Let’s just say you’ll understand why they decided to keep it hidden.

An Instagram post shows off the work done by the KNB EFX Group, who designed the being to take the form of a deformed, demon baby creature so as to torture Bullock’s character. Co-owner of KNB wrote that “It’s always a bit disappointing when so much effort goes into something that ends up in the cutting room floor, but I get it and it’s always what is best for the final product."

According to writer Eric Heisserer, there was a point in the movie where we see this thing on the screen, but it wound up being cut. The reason? Well, as is made clear when you scroll down, it looks sort of ridiculous. Like Benjamin Button in his early years if he ate nothing but lemons. Apparently, it was all too much for director Susanne Bier, and even Bullock, with the former telling Bloody Disgusting last month that no one could keep a straight face shooting the scene.

“It so easily becomes funny. We actually shot that and spent a lot of energy on, but every time I saw it, I was like this is not going to be tense. It’s just going to be funny. At first, Sandy was like, ‘I don’t want to see it’ because she thought it was scary. Then it was like, ‘Don’t show it to me because [I’ll laugh].’ Every time I did it, I was like, ‘Shit, that’s a different film.’”

At the end of the day, it was right to cut the creature from the movie, not only for suspense purposes but also because looking at thing would’ve turned the movie into a campy horror comedy. It's what I imagine a baby Oswald Cobblepot looked like when his parents threw him into the sewer in BATMAN RETURNS. Yeesh.

BIRD BOX is on Netflix now.
