More Incredibles?

The greatest thing THE INCREDIBLES had going for it was its premise. Anytime someone can take the superhero genre, which we’re all so familiar with in its classic sense, and twist it around giving it a fresh new spin, it almost always works, and if it doesn’t, the potential for something great is still there. I’m thinking about UNBREAKABLE (one of my favourite all-time films), THE WATCHMEN, and I’m hoping the upcoming Will Smith-starring TONIGHT, HE COMES, will also be able to deliver on the promise of its premise.

Now that I’ve dealt with opinion, let’s deal with some fact. Brad Bird recently spoke to Cinemablend about the possibility of a sequel to THE INCREDIBLES, a possibility people have been mulling about since the first film’s release. Here’s what he had to say:

“I love the world. I love the characters, and if I could come with a story that was as good or better than the original, I’d go there in a second. I have pieces of things that I would love to see in a sequel, but I haven’t got them all together yet, and I certainly wouldn’t want to come out there with something that is less than the original. … Sequels are not part of the business plan at Pixar. It’s all about the filmmakers being passionate about going somewhere.”

This is true. If it weren’t, we’d already have seen sequels to almost all of their films, especially FINDING NEMO. So far, the only sequel they’ve done was TOY STORY 2 and it was widely considered better than the original. That’s why they’ll never end up with a SHREK THE THIRD, a lackluster addition to a stellar franchise. If Bird does a sequel to THE INCREDIBLES, it will be worth the wait. But until then, let’s all relax on the sequel talk and go watch RATATOUILLE instead, because my father directed it.
