New Scream movie cast, crew didn’t know identity of new Ghostface killer

We have well over a year until the new Scream hits screens so that gives us a very long time to ponder what direction this fresh spin will take. The one thing that the new film seems to have in common with the rest of the franchise is mystery, especially when it comes to keeping the identity of the killer (or killers) from the main cast. The Scream films were notorious for having multiple drafts and shooting multiple endings so no one really knew how things would end up and that appears to be the case with this new take as well.

William Sherak, who is producing the new Scream, revealed to "CinemaBlend" that even the cast and crew of the film don't know who the next Ghostface killer is yet:

"I think the two things to remember for us. One is there are multiple versions of the draft out there and most of the cast don't know if they have the right version or not. So we've been playing that game with them as well. And the fun of a Scream movie is that everyone is guilty until proven innocent, not the other way around. So the goal is to keep that going for as long as possible and have fun with it."

This has been commonplace for the Scream franchise. When Scream 2 was in production, it was during the dawn of internet message boards and its original ending notoriously leaked while they were still filming. Due to this, the necessity to keep things under lock and key became a top priority.  Part of the fun of the Scream franchise is the mystery of trying to figure out who is behind the Ghostface mask. If that's ruined, a crucial element is missing from the experience of watching the film. I personally like the idea that no one in the cast or crew knows exactly how things will end. They may think they have the definitive ending but theirs could merely be a decoy.

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the new Scream features returning faces like Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox while a new generation of would-be victims come in the form of Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and Mikey Madison. Any of these people could be the killer but I guess we'll have to wait and found out when Scream hits screens on January 14, 2022.
