Teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sails in

I'll be honest, I kind of checked out of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise about halfway through the third film. I haven't seen the fourth and my life has continued without any feelings of loss there. However, I've enjoyed the characters from the franchise to a point, with Jack Sparrow being a near-perfect role for Johnny Depp to put his weirdness on display and he's had tremendous success as a result. And, although many (myself included) have waned on his drunken pirate antics, the series has steadily raked in cash, leading to the latest entry, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, which brings back o.g. pirates Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom, while ushering in a new batch of stars to fill out the ranks, including Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites, and Javier Bardem as the main villain, Captain Salazar. And now, we have our first look at what's in store with a teaser trailer. Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas

As teaser trailers go, this is pretty effective. The film looks very much in the style and tone as previous efforts, which is either good or bad depending on how you feel about the series, and it gives us our first look at Bardem's performance as Captain Salazar, which looks like part Silva/part Danny DeVito from BATMAN RETURNS. The biggest selling point for this film, and one that makes me set aside any moaning and groaning I'd do about another Pirates flick, is directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg at the helm, who have proven to be a talented duo, especially on the high seas (see: KON-TIKI) and swashbuckling adventure (Marco Polo). Their involvement alone has piqued my interest.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES sails into theaters on May 26, 2017.
