Park Chan-wook signs on to direct a Black List script by a pair of Bond screenwriters called Corsica 72

Park Chan-wook golden landscape

As most of us know, Park Chan-wook is about as close to “the man” as a person can get.  He recently wrapped production on STOKER, his English language debut with Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode, and has already agreed to stick with the English language and helm Black List script THE BRIGANDS OF RATTLEBORGE as a follow-up project.  But word is that a major star is needed to make the very violent RATTLEBORGE a reality, and while one is found and pre-production is sorted out it seems that Chan-wook will helm another Black List script in the form of CORSICA 72.

Written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the scribes behind the last five Bond films, CORSICA 72 comes with this plot: on the island of Corsica in 1972, childhood best friends Marco and Sauveur find their lives veering in opposite directions – the first towards the Mafia, the second toward a simpler life with his beloved, Lucia. When the Corsican mob kills Sauveur’s brother, they ignite a tit-for-tat blood feud that inevitably leads toward a final showdown.

CORSICA 72 is being produced in part by a company called 1984 Defence Contractors, one that has worked to bring both THE GREY and KILLING THEM SOFTLY to life.  And to my mind, their involvement alongside Chan-wook’s bodes very well indeed.  But what about you? Does CORSICA 72 sound like the sort of project that you want to see Chan-wook take on next?

You can catch STOKER on March 1st, 2013.
