Scarlett Johansson skeptical of Black Widow return

While talk of bringing back The Avengers is strong, Scarlett Johansson — who played Black Widow — isn’t sold on the idea.

After the box office disaster that was The Marvels, the MCU may need to liven things up again…by literally livening up again. Amid rumors that Marvel Studios is looking to bring back the Avengers team, many questioned how that could happen considering a number of members didn’t make it through the movies whether at the snap of The Blip or otherwise. One recent focus has been Scarlett Johansson, who made her most recent appearance as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in her namesake movie. So, how could they bring her back? Johansson isn’t so sure it could make sense…

During a sitdown with Savannah Guthrie on Today, Scarlett Johansson continues to assume that Black Widow has no true chance at returning – at least in a simple manner. “I think it might be…I think it was the end, right? I don’t know how you come back from that….She did [die], she did. She passed,” she said, referring to Black Widow sacrificing herself in Avengers: Endgame so that Clint Barton aka Hawkeye could retrieve the Soul Stone. “I would have…it would be a miracle [for the character to come back]. It would be real Marvel miracle. It would be a marvel. But, you know, who knows? Eh…I’m not sure.”

Of course, with the various multiverses that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made a trademark, Black Widow could return in one form or another. Now we just have to wonder if Scarlett Johansson is playing coy about the entire thing. Does she know substantially more than she’s letting on? Knowing Marvel, she could be held to contractual secrecy. Or, she’s actually in the dark and truly doesn’t think there’s a way back into the MCU for Black Widow. Either way, it will be interesting to see where the studio takes their franchise moving forward following its worst-ever opening weekend.

2021’s Black Widow helped kick off the Multiverse Saga, which is currently in Phase Five. This phase will have two more entries: Deadpool 3 and Captain America: Brave New World before it heads into Phase Six with Fantastic Four.

Do you think Marvel should bring back Black Widow and the rest of the Avengers or do they need to move on somehow else? Give us your thoughts below.
