The Cabin in the Woods 2 is a real possibility

During the tour for Drew Goddard's upcoming film THE MARTIAN, Den of Geek asked him about the possibility of a CABIN IN THE WOODS 2. Those of you who have seen the film might scoff at the idea of a follow-up, but Goddard gave us some surprising news.

The studio wants to do it. They've come to us.

The funny part is, I don't think we planned that movie to do a sequel, you know?

It doesn't [leave many loose ends]. But that being said, the fun thing about CABIN is, the rules are pretty crazy. We get away with a lot of crazy stuff. So, I'm sure we could figure it out if we got inspired to. I know Joss and I both feel like we don't want to tarnish what we did with the first one. With a sequel, we'd only do it if it made us laugh hard enough, I suppose.

There's nothing in the hopper right now, but who knows? The way Joss and I work, we might wake up tomorrow and go, "Let's go do that," or whatever.

So, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS 2 obviously isn't a done deal, but the fact that the studio is showing interest is a great sign. Let's hope that, if they do move a sequel into production, they don't hold onto it for quite as many years as last time.

And yeah, there's not a ton of room for future stories in the CABIN OF THE WOODS framework, but that doesn't mean there can't be a prequel. Or an unbelievably clever plot twist that nobody could have expected. I wouldn't put it past Whedon and Goddard. They did it the first time, why not again?

The real concern would be what monster they choose to pull into the spotlight. My biggest issue with the original film was that, out of every single possibile monster, they chose the zombie redneck torture family, perhaps the closest possible parallel to THE EVIL DEAD. It's something we've all seen before, and I'd love for the faceless ballerina to get a crack at leading the party.

Of course, the movie is still in limbo, but who's to say that Joss and Drew don't wake up tomorrow with a brain blast? We'll keep you posted!
