The Frighteners (1996) Peter Jackson – Show Me the Sequel!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I really miss the type of movies Peter Jackson used to make, back before he got into the blockbuster business. I hold on to the hope that someday he'll return to horror and give us something along the lines of his earlier films. The latest episode of our video series Show Me the Sequel has a suggestion for him: how about a sequel to his 1996 film The Frighteners? You can watch or buy a copy of The Frighteners at THIS LINK, and the Show Me the Sequel episode is embedded above.

Directed by Jackson from a screenplay he wrote with Fran Walsh, The Frighteners has the following synopsis:

Once an architect, Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) now passes himself off as an exorcist of evil spirits. To bolster his facade, he claims his "special" gift is the result of a car accident that killed his wife. But what he does not count on is more people dying in the small town where he lives. As he tries to piece together the supernatural mystery of these killings, he falls in love with the wife (Trini Alvarado) of one of the victims and deals with a crazy FBI agent (Jeffrey Combs).

Fox, Alvarado, and Combs are joined in the cast by Peter Dobson, John Astin, Dee Wallace, Jake Busey, Chi McBride, Jim Fyfe, Troy Evans, and R. Lee Ermey.

The Show Me the Sequel series is about

genre films that either never got sequels and we feel it's long overdue, fine movies that did get sequels but they were so lackluster that going back to square one is a must, or… flicks that DO have sequels but hey, we want freaking MORE of them! On top of that, we put our pitch for what said sequel should be about!

Show Me the Sequel is Written and Narrated by Pat Q, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by John Fallon, and Berge Garabedian is the Executive Producer.
