The Howling III: The Marsupials (1987) Revisited – Horror Movie Review

The Howling franchise is one of the most mind-bogglingly strange franchises in horror history. It went off the rails with its first sequel and kept going off in different directions with each further installment, ending up being a collection of random werewolf ideas. Most of the films are considered to be pretty bad, and yet each sequel has its fans. Even the seventh film, which is often referred to as one of the worst movies ever made, has its supporters, including legendary drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs. With the latest episode of our video series The Black Sheep, we’re looking back at one of the weirdest entries in the Howling franchise, the third movie. The Howling III: The Marsupials (watch it HERE). To find out what we had to say about this one, check out the video embedded above!

Written and directed by Philippe Mora, The Howling III has the following synopsis:

A tongue in cheek satirical thrashing of horror movies of recent years … with a new setting… Australia. When a pregnant bush girl runs away from her tribe to the city, it is discovered she is part marsupial and her tribe are a pack of werewolves. Meanwhile a visiting Russian ballerina transforms into a werewolf during rehearsals. A film crew filming a low budget werewolf movie is looking for a leading lady and find Jerboa – the girl who has fled her tribe. She’s been followed by her werewolf sisters (dressed as Nuns) and when it seems the city’s being plagued by werewolves, the military is called in.

The film stars Imogen Annesley, Barry Otto, Leigh Biolos, Dagmar Bláhová, Ralph Cotterill, and Barry Humphries (a.k.a. Dame Edna).
