Why I Love Movies – The Final Chapter

Why do I love movies? Well, that is a loaded question. How much time do you have? I could go into a long-winded diatribe about the art of film-making or the magic of the movies, but all of that has been said countless times before. Not every movie is a masterpiece, but every film has touched me in one way or another. Every other week, we will look at a handful of reasons why movies are so damn great..

CHAPTER XVII – THE FINAL CHAPTER

I love movies…

Because of Tom Tykwer‘s PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER.

Because of Simon Pegg as Scotty in STAR TREK and STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

Because of the STAR WARS cameo in THE LEGO MOVIE.

Because of “toast” in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE.

Because of Tony Todd in CANDYMAN.

Because of WC Fields in INTERNATIONAL HOUSE.

Because of learning how to pronounce “wingardium leviosa”.

Because of the underseen thriller MUTE WITNESS.

Because of Will Ferrell, Steve Carrel, Adam Sandler, and Jim Carrey in dramatic roles.

Because of Timothy Olyphant in GO.

Because of Michael Cimino‘s GODFATHER sequel, THE SICILIAN, starring Christopher Lambert.

Because of the first time I saw the brilliant MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO.

Because of the creepy as f*ck window scene from Tobe Hooper‘s SALEM’S LOT

Because of the first time I saw Akira Kurosawa‘s RAN.

Because of the few drive-in theaters left in America continue to hold up past traditions.

Because of Nicole Kidman‘s headlight dance in TO DIE FOR.

Because of the epic profanity in SEXY BEAST.

Because of reclining seats in movie theaters.

Because of Sam Neill in John Carpenter‘s IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS.

Because when you reach the end of a movie, you can always watch it again and again.

This will be the final chapter in WHY I LOVE MOVIES. After seventeen columns, I have shared 340 reasons for what makes movies the greatest form of entertainment and art ever created. I am sure I could keep going forever, but I want to thank every person who liked this column or shared their favorite movie moments in the talk backs below.
