Amy Schumer to star in the upcoming live-action Barbie movie

12.02.2016

Apparently, Amy Schumer is going to headline Sony's new big-budget live-action BARBIE movie. Here's the official synopsis:

"[I]n a perfect land of Barbies...one woman slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn’t fit it. She is expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset."

Okay. So this project just got sort of interesting.

As a boy my only interactions with Barbies were either to laugh at the lack of genitalia or to burn and mutilate them. I'm surprised I'm not a serial killer. So I'm not really one to comment if this sounds like something a fan of Barbie would enjoy or not. Hell, I'm not even sure I like the idea myself. But I will say it's at least a unique take. Honestly, I thought it was just going to something like HOUSE BUNNY or LEGALLY BLONDE or something, about a perky hot blonde girl who teaches some snarky, boyfriend-less feminist types to let loose and put on make-up and stuff. The fact that it's not that is refreshing alone. In fact, according to the initial report, that was one of the rejected ideas being pitched: "a buddy comedy...that teams Barbie with an overworked bureaucrat looking for an assistant." Ugh.

Honestly, it seems that the production team is earnestly trying to "take a contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity", which is a good start for a project like this. I like that the story and the casting of Schumer is actively addressing the controversial body image that the popular toy regularly promotes. Let's hope the script (one of three that were separately commissioned, one reportedly by Diablo Cody) lives up to that promise. A director is currently being sought after for the project.

So any fans of BARBIE out there? And if so, what do you think of the proposed film?

Extra Tidbit: Barbie was supposed to be in TOY STORY, but Mattel refused. However, when TOY STORY 2 came around, Barbie got an extended cameo.

Amy Schumer is the worst and this sounds terrible, even for kids. Why not make a Barbie movie about...Barbie. Not her deformed cousin.

Yup, only you can know that along with your baby punching/eating fantasies.

I could see Amy as Barbie... if she lost 50 pounds and got plastic surgery.

The problem I have with this concept is I grew up with a lot of girls that DID look like Barbie and were body shamed for not overeating and not exercising. There's now a trend with women that being obese is "not a choice" and they're "born that way"

It makes people like Amy Schumer feel better for not taking care charge of their health. Women who workout and eat right could hardly care less, but there are the ones who are naturally skinny with fast metabolisms, still eat everything they

It makes people like Amy Schumer feel better for not taking care charge of their health. Women who workout and eat right could hardly care less, but there are the ones who are naturally skinny with fast metabolisms, still eat everything they want, and have to the face the new age criticism that they're not real women.

This movie plot seems like it could have the potential to make overweight women feel empowered, but it also could have the potential of healthy or underweight women to feel ridiculed and scorned. And someone like Amy Schumer being involved makes me think it'll be the latter. Smh

From what I get from the synopsis written above, I believe the message is going to be more like "be yourself and be happy with who you are." That would include girls who are super thin with high metabolisms. Amy's character leaves the Barbie world after being shunned, and she discovers the "real world," which in real life, most of us live in. We're all unique - not cookie cutter perfect barbies.

Glinda, it has nothing to do with just "high metabolism" it is what parents feed their kids, or what adults choose to eat on a daily basis as well as their fitness regiment.

Please don't be ignorant and throw out that word as if that's the main reason why kids/adults have weight issues. You can actually change your body by eating right, exercising regularly, and eating more often (smaller portions).

So sergenatsnugglez, I'm assuming you look like Chris Pratt then, lol?

Hell, even if you do (I mean I suppose it's possible), that's not taking into account a whole list of factors. The same way some guys can't be rail thin (due to broad shoulders or what-have-you) the same goes for women. Sure they don't have to be overweight per se, but certain women are always going to have wider hips or broader shoulders or whatever and not fit the "Barbie", "supermodel", "comicbook heroine" role. And as I've mentioned in another comment, there's not a lot of different variety of body types in most media (and what little we have has been either fairly recent or rare).

Secondly, you have the issue of economics. Sometimes you don't have the money - or frankly the time - to eat right or exercise regularly. Maybe you want to eat better (cooking, not snacking, not going to fast food) but if you have to work two jobs and don't have time to cook? Or can't afford a lot of produce? This is a real problem facing working class people that assholes with a lot of free time and disposable income have no sympathy for. It's "work harder" (which is usually the case since many times working class people need to work multiple jobs) or "it's your fault you're poor" which then creates a cycle of [link] ("should've gone to college" even if statistically many service works did go to college, "should've gotten a better degree" even though many high-paying professions are harder to get into than ever before).

That's not even mentioning depression, and other mental issues that could make it hard for someone to commit to diet/regiment. And with health care as it is, it's been easier but still not *easy*.

And yes metabolism is a part of it as well.

My only issue is she's too old to play Barbie

Do you guys realize you're not the target audience for a Barbie movie? Even if you have fond memories of playing Barbie as children, you're still not the target audience. The message this movie sends to young girls is that you don't have to look like a stereotypical "Barbie" to be appreciated. We're all beautiful in our own unique ways.

Lol at pressure to be perfect. I don't know any girls that have this issue, and if they are out there, it's because of their parents, or their own problems. Stop reading people magazine, or Cosmo, or whatever bull shit there is out there. I guess I only hang out with woman that are happily married, educated and have careers, instead of focusing on fake bullshit like that.

If you watch Kardashians and get upset you don't look like them, you have 2 problems.

You could not be more wrong about girls being pressured to look a certain way. It's subliminal, not outward in most cases, and due to this its a pressure they put on themselves. Myself, I'm 52 years old and never seen a kardashian episode and am well past these issues, which weren't really issues with my generation anyway. I'm talking about young girls, not myself. You are clueless if you don't realize this about many young girls and our society, but judging from your post history this is

Yep. Nice using both anecdotal and unrepresentative sample fallacies in your argument.

If you think that body issues women face only come from Cosmo, Kardashians, or Barbie, than you are either willfully ignorant or stupid. No which way about it.

While you can argue He-Man or superheroes give men unrealistic expectations on bodies, you ALSO have many that show schlubby, nerdy, or otherwise "imperfect" men getting dream (i.e. "perfect" for all intents and purposes) girls as a reward.

Hell, that's a more than one genre of film (teen movies , movies about men with midlife crises, stoner comedies, etc.) While women don't have that contrast, besides maybe Melissa McCarthy. And you could argue there are other examples (I'm sure there are) but the fact I could name 50 versions of "fat guy gets hot chick or hot wife" movie and have to struggle to think of even one non-McCarthy movie (which even then there are only a handful) is a problem unless you're an asshole.

Not really judging the notion so much yet, but who will the audience be fort this? Schumer isn't usually the kind of comedian typical little girls watch, and this doesn't seem to be geared towards women who would already be Barbie fans. I'd be surprised if it appeals to men, so I think the issue as I see it is the concept might not generate a strong enough audience.

I doubt she's going to be doing her comedy routine in this movie. Little girls won't care who she is.

I'm a Barbie fan. Barbie was huge in my life as a little girl. I don't have a problem with this movie.

I'm not saying you should have a problem with this, but I don't see the audience and who this is meant to appeal to yet. Is it for little girls? Is it for women? Will it use comedy like the movie "Elf"? Or is it like more like "Enchanted" meets "Shrek" (the message from Shrek, not addressing Amy Schumer's looks)?

Schumer is known for a very adult themed type of comedy, they may just be using her for name recognition, but for now I'm just going on what I've seen from her in the past. I think

Horrible casting, no matter the plot. This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Not that I really care, but I don't get it. Is this a Barbie movie? It seems like the theme would be to reject what Barbie represents. That would be like making a GI Joe movie about an a guy protesting war.

Looking at the pic of her I think it's obvious she does not really have the glamour girl look needed to make the satire work. Plus you'll make fans of the toy PO'd as you tell them how dumb they were to like the Barbie beauty.
So look for this to get the same reaction from fans as Ghostbusters and Jem.
