Christopher Miller and Phil Lord will direct the Han Solo Anthology film

07.07.2015

There have been rumors swirling about a stand-alone Han Solo flick ever since Lucasfilm announced their Anthology series. Not only do we now have confirmation (and a short snyopsis), but we also have the directors; Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.

You'll undoubtedly recognize those names from 21 JUMP STREET and THE LEGO MOVIE. The former of which they established their great comedic stylings in the live-action realm, and the latter their love for the classic childhood toys in a movie that had no business being as great as it did. It looks though Lucasfilm agrees, as they have now officially announced the two directors as the helmers of the Han Solo prequel.

Scripting the film will be Star Wars favorite Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKE BACK, THE FORCE AWAKENS) and his son, Jon Kasdan. The story will focus on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord on directing the Han Solo Anthology film:

This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.

Writers Lawrence and Jon Kasdan speaking about the directors:

We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said the Kasdans. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy on Miller and Lord:

It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.

There's no doubts that Miller and Lord can assemble a hell of a cast, and that they show a true admiration for the projects they take on. They haven't exactly been known for their action finesse, but everyone said the same about Joe and Anthony Russo before they took on CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Obviously the big nut to crack here is who they're going to cast as a young Han Solo. There's not many people who can fill the shoes of Harrison Ford. Even everyone's favorite to take up Indiana Jones mantle (Chris Pratt) couldn't make this deal, as it's too close to his GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY character. Is it too soon for casting announcements at this week's SDCC? We'll find out!

The Han Solo Anthology film will be released on May 25, 2018.

There is only one scruffy looking nerf herder, and he is Harrison Ford. You may find an actor that looks similar like Anthony Ingruber or has similar charisma like Chris Pratt but it will never be the whole package and it will always feel like a cheap imitation. Likewise having someone take over for Indiana Jones, only works if it is portrayed by his son in the film and Ford becomes the fatherly role like Connery then and only then can we see Pratt or someone be a Henry Jones Jr. III. This is different, this is asking someone to do their best Han Solo impersonation as portrayed by Ford and to become the smuggler who could do the "Kessel Run" in less than twelve parsecs. It just seems like a bad idea.

I have a baaaad feeling about this

I am completely on board with the Rogue One film, but this crap is exactly what I was worried about with these anthology films. There is absolutely NO NEED for a Han Solo solo flick! I was hoping these new films would look toward pushing the series into the future, not relying on old tired characters. Don't get me wrong I love me some Han Solo but I don't want to see a film about a young version of him. I have mad respect for Miller and Lord but I'm not sure they are a right fit for this. Maybe

Mark Whalberg? I think Emile Hirsch or Jeremy Renner would be badass but I doubt they go either of those routes.

With Miller and Lord attached it'll probably end up being Channing Tatum...

This Will Hinge On The Casting Of Young Solo

I disagree that Chris Pratt should not play this role because of his Star Lord character being too similar. The same could have been said back in the day when Harrison Ford was cast as Indiana Jones being that his portrayal is almost identical to Han Solo. In fact, Chris Pratt would make a much better young Solo than Indiana Jones. He has the charm and the swagger to pull it off. Plus he actually resembles Harrison Ford. That said, I hope Disney recruits Ford to bookend this flashback tale by setting the meat of this new story between a "present day" adventure with the older Solo. Much like JJ Abrams eased moviegoers into young Spock by bringing Leonard Nimoy's original along for the ride, I hope we get the best of both worlds for Han's solo adventure.

They couldn't have gathered a much better team than this one for it. If it doesn't work properly it still wont change how good Harrison's Solo always and forever will be. But the likelihood of awesomeness is high.

Well I'm sure they'll hit all the major plot prerequisites - Making the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, dropping his shipment at the first sign of an Imperial Cruiser, and generally being a scruffy Nerf herder. Seems like unnecessary back story but something about how him and Chewie meet and become friends could be fun in a buddy / road movie in space kind of way.

I was hoping they would do the Flash instead of this but I cant blame them for taking this. A Han solo movie? I can see people with their pitch forks already. I'm not against it but its kinda meh. I'll hope it turn out good though and I have a strange feeling Aaron Paul is going to be cast as Han.

Bad Idea

Words cannot express how deeply disinterested I am in seeing anyone other than Ford play Han Solo and/or Indiana Jones. I'd rather see both characters retired permanently after Ford is finished with them for good.

And fleshing out Han Solo's youth will take something away from Han Solo, who is a bit of a mystery. I don't want to see him whining about getting power converters at Toshi station.

I agree with The_ConMan. Anthony Ingruber is not only a spitting image of a young Harrison Ford but also has his mannerism down to a T. Check out his Youtube-page if you dont believe me.

There will be zero suspense

While I think it'll most likely be successful you'll have a hard time picking a Han Solo who's not Harrison Ford that will please the fans AND most of all there will be NO suspense in any scenes involving Han just like there was zero suspense during all three Star Wars prequels with Anakin during the pod race, fight scenes etc. We know that Han will live no matter what happens around him so what's the friggin' point? You can say the same thing about a lot of franchises like Marvel as well but

I really don't see the point to this film. Sorry.

Funny, while I don't know that he'd change my mind on this, Hedlund does have a bit of a Fordian presence. Mostly untapped.

Taron Egerton

If they're committed to actually going young (rather than mid-30's to play "young"), 23-year-old Taron Egerton should be their first choice. Seriously, that kid's got charisma to spare. Now excuse me while I go re-watch Kingsman: The Secret Service for the millionth time.

Wtf!? These jackoffs aren't qualified to go anywhere near Han Solo. Channing Tatum as Chewbacca probably. This is the dumbest idea I've ever heard. Get Gunn or Nolan.

I like the directors, but I'm not a fan of this idea. I was afraid this would happen when Disney bought the rights to Star Wars. They don't have much interest in expanding the universe, just capitalizing on beloved characters and milking them for all they can get. I'm ok with the sequel trilogy and Rogue One, but these spin-offs about Han, Yoda, Boba Fett, etc., just don't interest me, and I'm a huge fan of those characters.

I watched Lego Movie for the second time over the weekend, and have to say these guys are some of the most talented directors out there (not to mention Lord went to my ex-girlfriend's high school lol). Yes, there's pushback to all of the reboots and remakes coming out, but if reboots are going to be made regardless, I'm happy at least some of them are in good hands. The casting will be very tricky, but I definitely have faith in these guys.

I feel like Lord & Miller are become Del Toro-esque in the number of projects they collect

And like Del Toro, they are mostly projects that I am stoked to see (CGI Spider-Man, The Flash, The MIB/ 23 Jump Street crossover, and now Han Solo). Hopefully, unlike Del Toro, the projects they sign onto will actually come to fruition. We know that at least one of theirs (the all-male Ghostbusters) have been canceled, so fingers crossed that 's not the beginning of a trend.

think about it...

Chris Pratt, Channing Tatum, Jai Courtney... all those guys named so far. that's not "young Han". that's just Han. they're all about the age range Harrison Ford played in the original trilogy.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking for a 15 year-old Han Solo, like they did with Spidey.

This may be the first Star Wars movie I plan not to see. It could be great. I love these directors. But I don't want to see any more young Han Solo. There could be someone out there that would change my mind (not Chris Pratt, too close to Star Lord).

Will they give the actor Ford's trademark chin scar? Ugh...the question is do they try to cast to be exactly like Ford or to Approximate him? I'm so conflicted....Emilia Clarke is no Linda Hamilton. Jai Courteney was better than Clarke, but still no Michael Biehn. It's very difficult to replicate iconic roles...Not feeling good about casting potentials, even if I do want to see this film, in principle.

I'm glad that the film was able to get these guys to direct and I'm sure it'll be great, but I feel like the franchise and universe of Star Wars is limiting itself by not introducing and/or expanding on lesser known, complex characters.

And I hope this movie doesn't interfere with them directing Flash for DC.
