Jump scares are a great way for filmmakers to get you to scream out loud, jump out of your seat, and potentially piss yourself, but when they aren't earned through the use of escalating tension and a satisfying payoff, they wind up feeling rather cheap. That's not to say that that's true for all jump scares, in capable hands they can be a powerful tool in the director's arsenal. A fun new supercut from Burger Fiction has gathered together some of the more effective ones from films like THE EXORCIST III, ALIEN, HALLOWEEN, JAWS, and many more. So turn out the lights, turn up the sound, and see how far you can get without screaming/jumping/pissing.

What are some of your favourite jump scares?

Extra Tidbit: Although it loses some of its effectiveness without that lovely long buildup, that sequence from The Exorcist III never fails to get me.

Nice list for sure...

Nice list for sure... After watching this list, for me - I'd definitely put the guy (can't remember his "Sin" at the moment) who was thought to be dead in Se7en as one that I will NEVER forget... And if I had to switch an albeit very effective jump scare from one movie on this list and replace it with one from the very same film I'd have to say it was from "Sinister"... While the clip they used was no doubt quite effective, I still felt the "lawnmower" scene was without a doubt the moment

The scares that don't even give you time to "look away" are always going to have a place with me.. Even if it is in a scene where you 100% anticipate the fact that SOMETHING is coming...
