Edgar Wright really wants Anna Kendrick to play Squirrel Girl

08.04.2016

With every new Marvel movie the biggest aspect that plagues everyone’s minds the most is casting. Who’s going to get to play the next beloved hero for, say, the next decade? You could say it’s the biggest responsibility for any one person to have. I mean, we only elect a president for an absolute max of eight years.

But once in a blue moon, the perfect casting choice just falls on our laps. A casting choice so perfect a movie just materializes around the person. Recently we have been graced with such a casting choice: Anna Kendrick as Squirrel Girl. Sure, it may have been a fantasy to believe such a movie would be made with the starlet, but now with a big name director behind her, it may be one step closer to reality.

The director in particular is Edgar Wright, the delightful Brit behind HOT FUZZ, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, ANT-MAN (kind of) and who directed Kendrick in SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD. Now he’s in her corner, taking to Twitter to campaign for her getting the role.

In the tweet he mentions a bunch of other cast members from PILGRIM who have also been cast as heroes, namely: Brandon Routh as Superman and The Atom; Chris Evans as Captain America and Human Torch; Brie Larson as Captain Marvel; Thomas Jane as the Punisher; and Michael Cera as Lego Robin. So now, it’s Kendrick’s turn.

I don’t know if he wants Kendrick to play Squirrel Girl so badly because he has some “stars who have played superheroes” collection complex a la Horace Slughorn in HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, but either way the pro-Kendrick community is welcome to have his support. Though it's just a lone tweet, maybe it will make enough of a splash in the geek circles to turn it into a wave. Then we can ride that wave to Squirrel-Girly awesomeness.

Well if they can pull of a talking racoon and get people to love it I have no doubt they could pull off such a magic trick as making Squirrel Girl of all thingredients work. It would have to be a comedy like Guardians though. There's no Winter Soldiering this puppy. Lol.

I have the same feelings for this as I did with Antman. He is a lame superhero and u really want to see what Edgar Wright does with it. He is the kind of guy who can make a lame superhero very funny and enjoyable. We lucked out with Peyton Reed toeing the line between Wrights vision for Antman and Marvel's demands. Hopefully they would give him a smaller budget and 100% creative control (within reason). I can actually see this being a series of short films. About 5 minutes of Squirrel-girl

Lots of better characters need attention.

These kind of stories are kind of obnoxious. Squirrel Girl at best is a cameo character, spend money producing good female characters instead of D-list.

No one would see a Squirrel Girl movie, no matter what. Just put her in an Avengers flick and call it a day. I just wanna see her in that costume...

I really hope this happens, because then there will be no way anyone can say that superhero movies haven't jumped the shark.

She would be perect for Squirrel Girl and would be much more exciting casting for that particular character than Larson as Captain Marvel. And based off Squirrel Girl and the themes and the characteristics that come along with the character, I can't think of a better director than Wright to handle the material. But I doubt he would want to take on another Marvel film after the fiasco with Ant Man.

I really hope this means that he also have an interest in directing a Squirrel Girl movie. Not to knock on his directing ability, which I personally loved, but I've never felt Edgar Wright to be the (no pun intended) right director for Ant-Man. A Squirrel Girl movie starring Anna Kendrick and directed by Edgar Wright, though? I like the sound of that! The character is so zany that I can't think of anyone better to translate her to the big screen.

This sounds super dumb. And I love me some Edgar Wright, but I doubt Marvel really gives two shits about his opinion these days after walking off Ant-Man at the 11th hour.
