Grandparents be crazy in first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit

04.23.2015

I’m one of those suckers who’s still holding out hope for M. Night Shyamalan to amaze us once again with a great film. THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE are two of my favourites and I consider SIGNS to be pretty darn enjoyable as well, so what happened? After three mostly solid films the director has since been on a steady decline as film after film show less and less of the filmmaker who the world once dubbed "the next Spielberg."

Today we finally have get our first trailer for THE VISIT, M. Night Shyamalan's micro-budgeted return to horror. Lets take a look at what he has in store for us and decide whether we're ready to welcome Shyamalan back into our hearts.

The found footage aspect threw me a bit as I find it's a gimmick that is rarely done effectively, but if you accept THE VISIT for what it is I have a feeling we may be pleasantly surprised by the end result. I've got my fingers crossed that this is the first step of M. Night Shyamalan's return to the storyteller who was once full of so much promise. Those first film's weren't just flukes were they?

Here’s the official synopsis for The Visit:

Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable) and producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious series) welcome you to Universal Pictures’ The Visit. Shyamalan returns to his roots with the terrifying story of a brother and sister who are sent to their grandparents’ remote Pennsylvania farm for a weeklong trip. Once the children discover that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing, they see their chances of getting back home are growing smaller every day.

Really, M. Night? Did we not learn anything from The Happening? This guy had 2 good movies in him and one flawed, but enjoyable one. At this point, he couldn't write himself out of paper fucking bag.

It's like they took every horror cliche and barfed it on film. It didn't even look scary. Apparently, it's supposed to be a "comedy" but I didn't find any of it "funny" in the slightest.

I don't think this looks like a great movie. But it doesn't look like the kind of movie I ever pictured Shyamalan making. Looks like a weekend with the Castevet's mixed with a little Hansel and Gretel. The jump-scare trailer is annoying though. The found-footage style sems a bit out-of-place. But I think Shyamalan could've had a better career if he really focused on the psychological, and not the supernatural, for most of his movies (even "The Sixth Sense" drew its strength from the

Nah

Looks like The Happening-tier (ie: a bunch of moments M. Night thinks are just 2spooky but really just end up being unintentionally hilarious). The found footage gimmick here seems especially tacked on, too.

Can you say 'gives away way too much in a trailer so there is no need to see the film"?

Yeah, I'll pass.

Found footage movies are retarded and such a spent fad. Plus this looks like Shyamalan is so desperate to keep his career going he's just resorted to pure shock tricks.

The guy has a great eye for unsettling visuals (I remember seeing the trailer for The Happening and thinking it looked amazing) and this trailer (and even the poster) certainly look good but he has done so many crap and "fooled us" so many times that I can't help but to stay on the fence for this. Hopefully it will be, at the very least, an enjoyable thriller/horror movie.

Should have made this 10 years ago and it might have looked fresh, but I'm down.

ignoring that it is found footage and M Night Shayamalan, this doesnt look that bad. but considering the track record for both those factors, i do not have high hopes for this movie.

Hmm, seems interesting even though it's a M.Night directed pg13 rated found footage horror flick.

That was actually a pretty damn effective trailer. Definitely was suspenseful enough to warrant my attention.

It looks promising

I can't help but think that being an M. Night film that this is going to turn out crap. But I was really impressed by the trailer so fingers crossed that he's turned his films around!

Fucking love it!

This is what I think of when I think of scary horror. If I didn'y know I would have no idea it was made by him and for a filmaker whose always been sort of positive it looks dark as hell.

He screwed up the franchise by making the first movie so bad, that no studio would ever attend to try again. The Last Airbender could be a great film franchise in the right hands. But instead of starting something, they handed it to a guy and made sure of no redemption on film for a long time.

I just don't know

how I feel about this. Mr. Night had and has such potential. He knows how to make intense moments in scenes where almost nothing is happening. His direction of actors and his writing is a huge issue. This movie looks creepy. But can it be creepy without moving into "corny/the Happening" territory? I actually hope so. But I'm not gonna hold my breath just yet.
