Simon Kinberg to create Marvel-style movie universe for Fox

12.05.2013

After hearing the news that we will be getting X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 another interesting story has come over the wire.

Fox has signed a new three-year first-look deal with Simon Kinberg. What's most interesting about this is that the writer-producer will be able to expand and share universes with the comic properties retained within the studio. This all in the hope that Fox will have a model much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, as I indicated before, Fox does hold the rights to some of the Marvel characters. So, waiting to see that X-MEN and FANTASTIC FOUR crossover some time in the near future?

Kinberg worked as writer and producer on both X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. He's also working on the reboot of FANTASTIC FOUR. Not to mention putting his talents to work on the STAR WARS REBELS series. Here's what he had to say:

“I have a lot of ideas on how to built those brands and do what everybody is thinking of these days: Be like Marvel. I want to be able to build stories over multiple movies.”

Kinberg plans to work on more than the already established names saying that there is a "special kind of satisfaction on working on a story that no one has ever heard before." That said, we could see more indie comics like the adaptation of Archaia's Rust to be directed by Carlos Saldana (RIO) which Kinberg hopes will "Evoke an Amblin-esque" tone. There's also the ebook from Andy Weir called THE MARTIAN which has locked Drew Goddard as writer and director.

omg!!! my wish may possibly come TRUE!!!!!!!

PLEEEAAASSSEEEEEE develop the intrigue and build-up to a fantastic four/x-men crossover, portraying them existing in the same universe, and eventually crossing over in a down-the-line, future film...!!!! PLEASE?!?!??! it could be Fox's answer to the Avengers!!! and its just a sick ass idea, that was only explored in the comics in one-off miniseries', that weren't even that canonical or intriguing that much.... so, he could create his own lead-up and continuity in this respect, leaving him with

I JUST WANT IT TO HAPPEN!!! especially if im right and fox is semi-rebooting the x-men series, erasing/ignoring last stand, wolverine origins, etc., so the continuity can be fixed and repaired the way it should be, and especially since fantastic four is now being rebooted as well (THANK GOD! the previous films sucked buttle).... im so praying fox goes this direction with this announcement of creating a "marvel-style cinematic universe with Simon Kinberg".......

I think Mark Millar is still heavily involved in this process, which is a good thing. Kinberg isn't as bad as people below are saying, but he's still not the greatest choice for this joe. Luckily I've read on may sites that Millar is overseeing a lot of the Fox-Marvel universe as well, and that a definite plus.

I can't stand people who talk of "brands" and "franchises".

I'm going to the cinema regardless. This is all great stuff even though the films usually donít live up to my own heightened level of giddiness. That said...for those that hold dreams of Marvel Studios one day getting it all back...for now...buy yourself a copy of Lego Marvel Superheros and play it. Be both excited like a school boy as you marvel at the way Lego put it all together and cry like a school boy when you're reminded we may never get a live action version of this (on bright side,

So let me get this straight, Kinberg shouldn't be allowed to guide Fox's universe because he co-wrote Jumper, yet no one has a problem with his partner in crime running WB's? Hilarious!

I'd like it but

Kinberg is a hack. Jumper, X-Men The Last Stand and xXx State of the Union were terrible.

Eh it's cool and all but the two groups were never really that close. The FF have more ties to the likes of Spider-Man, Hulk (which makes me sad that I'lll never see a live action Hulk v. Thing fight), She-Hulk and the Inhumans; all of which they don't have the rights to. X-Men was always fine as a stand alone universe, even in the comics, because there's so many god damn mutants!

Meh'
Didn't they already hire Miller to do this, or did he just say that enough times that people started reporting it?

"HEY we messed up and someone did it better with less famous characters... LET'S COPY THEIR FORMULA!"

All of this sounds great to me. I really wish all the studios would join together and share all of the rights with one another. The epicness and possibilities would be endless.
