As an unabashed fan of stop-motion I'm super excited to see THE BOXTROLLS tumble into theaters next year. From Laika, the studio that brought us CORALINE and PARANORMAN, this latest adventure is based on the book 'Here Be Monsters' by Alan Snow and features the voices of Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Toni Collette, Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Tracy Morgan, and Jared Harris. In the latest trailer, we get a sneak peek at the building of this stop-motion world, which is fascinatingly detailed, right down to a flower growing in the street. Simply put, this looks awesome.

Take a gander:

Here's the synopsis:

The new 3D animated feature from Laika Studios tells the tale of the Boxtrolls, monsters who live underneath the charming streets of Cheesebridge, who crawl out of the sewers at night to steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, thats the legend the townspeople have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are a community of lovable oddballs who are raising as one of their own an abandoned and orphaned human boy named Eggs. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by a villainous exterminator who is bent on eradicating them, Eggs must venture aboveground to save them, where he teams with an adventurous young girl to save not only the Boxtrolls but the soul of Cheesebridge.

Really, there isn't much more to say about this. It's one of those things where I'm all in, no matter what. Stop-motion is one of those exceptionally intriguing art forms that fascinates me on every level. Seeing the level of care, detail, and absolute, mind-numbing execution in making these kinds of films is amazing. With a great batch of voice talent to back the film up, I have little doubt that THE BOXTROLLS will be anything short of awesome. And, I've punched my adjectives card for the day.

THE BOXTROLLS opens on September 26, 2014.

looks cool

Way better than the animated garbage we've been subjected to in the past year (with the exception of The Croods, and I'm sure The Wind Rises will be excellent too.) Too bad we have to wait til next fall.

Stop-motion is a fantastic cinematic tool, I just can't get enough of it. This movie looks like it will be a spectacle to behold, and I'll appreciate every second of it considering it must have been one tough film to make.

If moviemaking is akin to building worlds, then these folks are the pinnacle. Paranorman was my favourite animated film last year and I agree with Stratburst that it should have won Best Animated Feature over Brave. It was so meticulously put together, exciting and beautiful to look at, well-acted and very heartfelt. I was crying buckets by the end. Looking forward to this one and whatever Laika will tackle next!

I'm in

I love what LAIKA is doing, ever since they brought out CORALINE. I thought PARANORMAN was robbed of the Best Animated Film Oscar last year; definitely my favourite of the movies released that year.
