Wesley Snipes says he’s up for Blade 4

BLADE was a very different kind of comic book film when it was released. For starters, there are not a lot of hard R-rated comic book flicks. However it also delivered on the action front, as well as one of the best portrayals of a protagonist. Wesley Snipes simply IS Blade. When Guillermo del Toro took the reigns for BLADE II, he delivered one of the most fun comic book flicks of all time. Afterwards, series writer David S. Goyer stepped up to the plate to direct the third installment, BLADE: TRINITY, and that’s where it all went to shit. Poor direction aside, the story was a mess. While the idea of bringing Dracula to the modern day is a fascinating one, the execution failed on all fronts. That doesn’t mean it’s game over for Snipes, though, as a recent interview with MTV is happy to point out.

When asked about whether or not there could be a BLADE 4 in his future:

I’d be open to it. You know I think we got some stones left unturned and there’s some latitude for us to build on. I’d love to get back in the suit and do some things that I’ve learned how to do now that I didn’t know how to do then. I think we’re better at making that kind of a film now. You know, some of the things that we did in the early parts of the franchise were experimental and now they’ve become customary in a lot of the AVENGERS films and other comic book adaptations.

Given all the controversy on set between Goyer and Snipes during BLADE: TRINITY, I’m doubtful that Goyer would return to the series in any capacity. He’s plenty busy himself, scripting the next line of Superman flicks. Furthermore, the rights to make the film, which were with New Line, have now reverted back to Marvel proper. Marvel has some dates lined up, but what are the odds that Blade is one of them? There was talk of doing another film, but would it bring back Snipes or completely reboot the series?  It would be hard to pull of a Blade that’s PG-13, and I’m not sure how willing they are to go to a darker place at this point. Still, I would like a better end for the character Snipes helped to build.

You can check out Wesley Snipes next in THE EXPENDABLES 3, which hits theaters August 15, 2014.
