We’re still no closer to learning who will be playing Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DCU, but the latest rumour points to Tom Brittney as our new Batman. If that name rings a bell among DC circles, it’s because he was once one of the finalists to star as the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman before David Corenswet landed the gig.
Is Tom Brittney Going to be Batman?
On a recent episode of his podcast, John Campea claimed he knows who the DCU Batman will be, adding that the role has already been cast. Campea said several sources had given him the same name, but he wasn’t ready to reveal it until he had more confidence in the information, only offering, “It’s not a name I would have guessed.“
Other scoopers later chimed in, suggesting that the actor in question is Tom Brittney, best known for starring in Grantchester. Brittney will next appear alongside J.K. Simmons and Titus Welliver in The Westies, an upcoming crime drama series for MGM+.
However, Campea somewhat backtracked in a subsequent episode, calling himself a “f***ing nobody” who just likes to shoot the shit with fellow movie fans, and saying that news outlets shouldn’t be reporting on the “random things” he says. Still, the rumour has been spreading far and wide, so it’s probably worth talking about. Could it happen? It’s not impossible, but based on the very few confirmed facts we have, I’d say it seems unlikely at the moment.
Popular fan choices for the role have included Alan Ritchson (Jack Reacher), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and Jensen Ackles (The Boys), so Brittney would certainly be a lesser-known pick. Then again, David Corenswet wasn’t exactly a household name before Superman.
Some have even speculated that the name was deliberately leaked to shift the conversation away from Supergirl’s poor box-office performance.
The Brave and the Bold
The Brave and the Bold was one of the first projects James Gunn announced for the new DCU, but there hasn’t been much movement beyond Andy Muschietti signing on to direct the film.
Gunn did provide a promising update for The Brave and the Bold late last year, saying, “I think we have a really, really good story now for what’s happening with Batman.” Christina Hodson is writing the script. The film is expected to find Bruce Wayne fighting alongside his son Damian Wayne, who will be Robin.
