It appears that fans are eager to jump back into James Cameron’s visually stunning Avatar universe. The teaser for the film’s sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, garnered more views than any of the Disney Star Wars sequels in its first 24 hours online.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water pulled in 148.6 million viewers in its first 24 hours. 23 million of those views came from China which indicates that it’s likely to have a strong box office future in that region. These numbers are higher than any figures raised by any of the Disney Star Wars sequels, including The Rise of Skywalker (112.4 million views). Perhaps a better comparison is the first teaser trailer for The Force Awakens, which was viewed 55 million times in its first 24 hours online. At the time of its release, the 2014 film came following a considerable gap between itself and 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. It has been 13 years since audiences first journeyed to Pandora and its views are considerably higher in its first 24-hour period. The trailer first premiered to the public ahead of screenings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Avatar sequel has a lot to live up to as the first film became the highest-grossing film of all time with a gross of $2.84 billion worldwide. Some have wondered if the gap between movies will make moviegoers not care as much but this is an early sign that they do care and Avatar: The Way of Water is possibly on its way to being a big hit for James Cameron. Since this is the first of his three Avatar sequels, a lot will be riding on this film to be successful.

What are YOUR thoughts on the success of the Avatar: The Way of Water teaser trailer? The film hits screens on December 16, 2022.
