Deadpool 3: Succession actor Matthew Macfadyen joins the highly-anticipated Marvel sequel

Succession actor Matthew Macfadyen is joining the cast of Marvel’s Deadpool 3! The highly-anticipated sequel stars Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With a Mouth, Wade Wilson, and Hugh Jackman as James “Jimmy” Howlett, aka Logan, aka Wolverine. Emma Corrin (The Crown) also stars in a villainous role. Macfadyen’s character remains a mystery, though sources indicate he serves as a “third wheel” for Wade and Logan’s bloody adventure.

Macfadyen plays Tom in HBO’s Succession, which premiered its fourth and final season on Sunday. Macfadyen is an Emmy-winning actor, and I’m curious who Marvel thinks is a fitting “tag-a-long” character to pair with Deadpool and Wolverine.

Shawn Levy will be entering the franchise with this entry as the director. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese will write the screenplay, who will work from a previous draft by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin. Also, this being the first Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of Deadpool, Kevin Feige will join the project as a producer along with Reynolds and Levy.

Plot details for this film are not yet known and will be kept secret in true Marvel fashion. Not only will this be the first time the rated R property will be working within the official Marvel Studios brand, but this marks a surprise performance by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine since he donned the claws for the James Mangold-directed Logan. Addressing fans, Reynolds and Jackman said the events of Deadpool 3 would not change the outcome of Logan, in which the Canadian superhero died during the film’s finale.

Earlier this month, while speaking with La Parisien, Jackman made it sound like he would be playing more than one version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3. “Yes, it will even be a dual role,” Jackman said. “Ryan and I have been friends for twenty years; we have a lot of fun together. We are filming this summer. That’s why I’m so happy to be in Paris right now and to be able to enjoy French gastronomy. Because very soon, I’m going to have to put myself on a strict diet to remake my Wolverine body: steamed chicken and broccoli! “

This “dual role” that Hugh Jackman speaks of could mean just about anything. We could be getting multiple Wolverine variants in Deadpool 3, Jackman could play an entirely different role besides Wolverine (perhaps even himself), the actor may have misspoken, or he may have meant something else.
