The MORTAL KOMBAT film series has had an odd journey to be sure. The first film, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson was a solid hit for the franchise, while the sequel, MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNHILIATION, was less than stellar. Since then, rumors of a new film bounced around, ultimately leading nowhere until director Kevin Tancharoen took it on with his MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH short film, which served as a concept for Warner Bros. to get a new feature made.
Although WB didn’t greenlight a new film, they did greenlight the web series, which is now jumping into a second season. The first series had a number of B-grade stars, including Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, with season 2 picking up some new faces, including Casper Van Dien as Johnny Cage, Mark Dacascos as Kung Lao, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa returning to the role of Shang Tsung, the same villainous role he played in the first film.

This looks pretty fun and I’ll likely catch the episodes as they hit. It’s not high art and it won’t change your life, but it’s good, solid, cheesy, action-y fun for those of us that spent countless hours battling our friends and delivering fatalities throughout our childhood. If anything, it’s a nostalgic throwback to the good ol’ Mortal Kombat days.
MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY season 2 will debut it’s 10-episodes via Machinima’s You Tube channel in 2013.
