In the mid-nineties, very few stars were bigger at the box office than Demi Moore. Ghost, Indecent Proposal, and Disclosure were all mega-hits, and for a while she was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood, earning $12.5 million for Striptease. For some reason, this caused a huge backlash against Moore, who was perceived as greedy, despite her male co-stars (and former hubby Bruce Willis) all earning paychecks that dwarfed hers. She was dubbed "Gimme Moore" by the media, and when her passion project, GI Jane hit theatres, it was a financial flop and critically lambasted, earning Moore an inexplicable Razzie nomination.
That's a shame because Ridley Scott's G.I. Jane is a terrific action-drama, and Moore's performance is a career highlight. She went all out to play the first female Navy SEAL trainee, undergoing a physical transformation that's still incredibly impressive twenty-four years later. Truly a lost classic, Demi Moore's G.I. Jane deserves serious re-appraisal, with Moore's performance a highlight, while Viggo Mortensen has a terrific role as her tough drill instructor.
