New The Irishman trailer offers best look yet at Scorsese’s latest epic

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Film fans everywhere are itching to see Martin Scorsese’s latest, THE IRISHMAN, because A.) It’s Martin Scorsese, B.) It’s got Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, and C.) Because it seems like it’s been in development for a century used modern visual effects to de-age it’s leading men. In the new trailer for the movie we get the best look yet at the iconic cast at work and with a few years shaved off thanks to digital effects, as De Niro’s Frank Sheeran enters the ranks of Pacino’s Jimmy Hoffa, and how doing so changed his life forever.

The previous teaser showed off a fair amount of footage but hid the de-aging of De Niro until the very end in a bit of a “turn-of-the-chair” reveal. But in this new one that aired last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, we get a much more detailed look, seeing how he and some of the others are looking a bit more youthful in the early years as Sheeran started working with Hoffa, and then all the way to present-day where he just looks like, well, present-day De Niro. Looking for those details is the most interesting thing about the trailer because as for getting a grasp of the story it doesn’t do the best job.

With the official runtime over 200 minutes and the word is it’s more of a slow burn than, say, WOLF OF WALL STREET, it’s probably hard to sum everything up in a 2-3-minute preview. This one tries, linking to how Sheeran perhaps contributed to the famed disappearance of Hoffa, but you can tell it’s only scratching the surface of everything the whole movie will cover. As for the visual effects, we will have to wait until the full movie hits to really discern how effective they are, but based on this, yep, De Niro and the boys certainly look…de-aged. But, did the team do a good enough job to justify that reported $175 million cost? Getting the answer is what makes the movie one of the hotly anticipated of the fall season.
