Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson May. 22, 2008

With IRON MAN 2, CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE AVENGERS all on the upcoming schedule for Marvel Studios, where do they turn to now for their next film? RUNAWAYS. Those of you who stopped collecting comics back in the 1990s might not have any idea what I'm talking about. Launched in 2002, the series follows a group of teens who discover their parents are part of a villainous cabal known as The Pride. They band together to help put a stop to their parents and help make up for the evil they have done. Unlike most superheroes, they wear no costumes, have no nicknames and don't have a "team name." I think it's a smart move by Marvel to show they've got more up their sleeve than the Golden Age heroes they've brought to the screen so far. As WANTED is proving, there's more to comic adaptations than Stan Lee creations. RUNAWAYS was created by "Y: The Last Man" creator and "Lost" writer Brian K. Vaughan with Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," SERENITY) taking over once Vaughan left. No date is set for RUNAWAYS nor has any talent been announced to write or direct but why not bring Whedon aboard to work his magic?

Box Office Death
Joss Whedon is by no means untalented, it's just that audiences has moved on from his style of dialogue. He's brilliant with plot and character and actually does what most SF writers don't...he creates interesting female characters. But his dialogue is just too hip for it's own good. He's brilliant with plot and character and actually does what most SF writers don't...he creates interesting female characters. But his dialogue is just too hip for it's own good. Kinda like the first 15 minutes of Juno. And it's not that he doesn't have a sizeable following, but that in itself won't fill theaters. If only comicbook geeks went to see a comicbook movies they'd stop making them from lack of ticket sales. What ensures the success of comicbook movies is the broad appeal and accessibility built into them during the adaptation process. With Whedon only writing for himself and his fans it simply doesn't appeal to non-geeks.

I'm just speculating but I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason he got the boot from Wonder Woman was that he wasn't writing the character the way the producers felt was acceptable. Can you imagine Princess Diana making rapidfire, hip cultural references or turning dramatically into the camera and spitting out some clever, eye-rolling one-liner?

I'd prefer that Vaughan took the reigns himself.

As for you CB, I've made all my points quite clear and I'm all done with YOU. So go off and play with your chew toy...puppy dog.

Bottom line: don't come here and complain about the journalism, just because no one cared about YOUR work when you entered the production world decades ago.

Until next time, when you post a comment complaining about the fact that there should be a hyphen between “Spider” and “Man” or some shit, enjoy laughing at other people with your friends when things slow down at the office.

But I will take issue with anyone calling Joss Whedon "Box-Office Death". That's just plain stupid. He's directed one film. ONE. He's had three television shows and is coming up on four. One show lasted seven seasons and one lasted five. FIREFLY was totally fucked by Fox's programming department by showing the episodes out of order. But somehow, someone out there thought it was a good idea to let him make a film out of that show, and SERENITY may not have pulled in the crowds at the theater (who honestly expected it to?), but it's had its first extremely popular DVD that spawned a Spec Ed that has also sold equally well, not to mention all the midnight screenings that are still held all over the country (well, not so much anymore since Fox declared that illegal since they're not seeing any revenue from it... I fucking hate Rupert Murdoch). Hollywood isn't as much about asses in seats anymore, as the recent WGA strike and the upcoming SAG strike are proving. Personally, I can name about 100 films each year that I would rather wait for on DVD.

To preempt the joke, "Yes, including one of mine if I ever sold a screenplay."

I would really hope to get someone of Whedon's talent as a director and ideally have BKV write it. I don't see anything wrong with that scenario. But if SERENITY = "Box-Office Death", then what the hell can we expect from RUNAWAYS? A by-and-large no-name comic with a cast of teens? The only big names they could get are the Pride members.

BTW, Nathan Fillion is enjoying some success on the unfortunately high-rated DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Never count out Bill Pardy.

ALL THIS OVER A LINE?
Jeez...all this over a "Golden Age" line? Dude, Santos, take it easy...it's a f**kin' line for crying out loud. Fine, so Mike may have been wrong...you don't have to prove how big of a comic fan you are by laughing out loud at a simple error with your two friends who for some reason seem as weird as you are. It makes other comic fans such as myself look bad. So yeah, Mike didn't know who exactly was in the Golden Age...hey, I didn't know either and guess what, I LOVE comics! I can hear you laughing now. JoBlo is a movie site for Pete's sake, not an Airforce War unit...sometimes "accuracy of information" as you call it, isn't what you always get. Go to CNN.com if you need something like that. Want fun? Head back over here. Go down to the store dude, buy yourself a sense of humor.

P.S : Love the Runaways idea...hope Marvel does the film some justice..!

First off, I NEVER questioned Mike Sampson's journalistic integrity...I questioned his journalistic credibility. There's a world of difference between the two. First off, I NEVER questioned Mike Sampson's journalistic integrity...I questioned his journalistic credibility. There's a world of difference between the two. You can have integrity squirting out of your butt and still not have what it takes to write a proper news story. Conversely, you can be the best journalist in the world but your work is worthless unless you do it with integrity. One has nothing to do with the other. Mr. Sampson may well be the nicest, most descent guy in the world...it doesn't change the fact that as the writer he placed a glaring error in his op ed section AND that as Editor-In-Chief he allowed the story to go live without a fact check. I was addressing competence NOT integrity. They are different and distict. Besides, I'm sure Mr. Sampson is a big boy and can defend HIMSELF should he feel the need to.

Secondly, THIS IS WHERE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO COME TO LAUGH AT AND COMMENT ON PEOPLE'S WORK!!! Or have you forgotten where you are?

I'm sorry you have such a delicate constitution but I didn't put you on your high horse nor is it my obligation to coddle you. If you disagree with my comments then say so and say why (rudely or otherwise). But don't just throw out some patronizing and obnoxious three word comment and not expect an equaly obnoxious (if not an outright escelated) reply. Taking the high road after the fact won't win you any cigars either.

Congratulations on getting such high marks in school but when you get out there in the REAL production world (where I've worked for decades) you'll find that..."no one cares".

And yeah...you DID start it.

I'd prefer a Runawyas film over a Young X-MEN film any time, this sounds like a good idea, Marvel can introduce these characters through film for those who don't know of or read the comic.

By defending my script it was fairly obvious that your next line of attack would be to imply that I was full of myself, but that's just not the case - I'm proud of what I wrote. Will anything come from it? Maybe, maybe not. I just think it's very easy for people to sit back and laugh at, or comment on, other people's work.

You've done that twice now.

C'mon...you're a screenwriter, you can to better than that! Although since you've used your droll little "Wait a minute/Oh no wait" device twice now, I have to wonder!

Allow me to reply in a style you can understand:

Oh no, wait...aren't you also sitting in front of a computer engaging in this fun little flame war too? Why yes, I do believe you are. I guess that makes you just as "sad", or should I say as "nice" as the three of us.

BONG!

Thanks for re-affirming my belief in myself.
It was actually a screenplay I wrote in my third year for an adaptation class I was taking, it was not my final thesis (which was an original screenplay). I'm not ashamed of it at all, it got me into my Honors year of study (and then into the Golden Key Honor Society), so it couldn't have been too bad. So the guy made a mistake, I don't think his journalistic credibility needs to be called into question because of it.

Wait a minute – I'm trying to reason with a guy who laughs out loud when people incorrectly label certain heroes as belonging to the “Golden Age”, what am I thinking?

I do. So did the two guys next to me when I pulled up the story (we actually broke out in laughter when we read the "Golden Age" line).

As for the story itself...no big wup, kinda smells like X-Men meets Adventures in Babysitting. Cricker nailed it right on the head...Whedon is box office death. Getting Vaughan to right it himself would be the best way to ensure faithfulness to the comic.

There is a writer, probably the only one I'd accept as a die-hard fan: Vaughan himself. So at least we can be secure in not expecting drastic, irritatingly unneeded changes.

More to the point, Brian K. Vaughan is a great writer and also a great guy. I once sent him an e-mail asking him for advice on my college thesis (it was a screenplay adaptation of Y: THE LAST MAN). I did not expect him to reply. However, not only did he respond, but he took the time to write a detailed explanation of his involvement in writing an adaptation for New Line Cinema (which meant he couldn’t read my adaptation for legal reasons) and also explained how he came to come up with his own idea for a comic: “I was a huge fan of PREACHER when I was a film student at NYU, but Garth Ennis encouraged me to try to create something new rather than adapt work of his, so I came up with the idea for Y: THE LAST MAN instead.” I'm totally happy with this news and I didn't even know this comic existed until five minutes ago... good times.

What Golden Age heroes?
The only golden age heroes in the Marvel universe are Captain America, the original Human Torch, Namor and (arguably) Ka-Zar. None of which have, as yet, made it to the big screen.
